Greenfield Village, Take 2

We're doing another day at Greenfield on Sunday. I'm hoping to get a more unified photo journal this time out. Let's hope it all goes better than our train excursion today.

What a nice day at The Henry Ford. Photos and videos to follow. We actually made it to the museum this time. We saw the Weinermobile and the car Kennedy was shot in. They also had a nice selection of trains, car, and airplanes.

Well, here's a "once around" the Village, literally. I used my tripod as a cheap steadycam by extending the legs a bit and holding the tripod just under the camera, letting it move a little. I wish I could find my license for the software I used to use for video, but this seems to have worked ok.

First is the segment from the entrance of the Village back to the plantation area. It has a lot of the Edison and Wright buildings along the track but the conductor, who's narrating, is keeping up with the front of the train, so the buildings come after he talks about them.

This is the second segment, from the plantation area to the beginning of the train area. There's a lot of woods here. I tried to speed up as much woods as I could, but there's some interesting narration about the new nature area they've been working on.

And the third segment. This goes by the roundhouse and through the Firestone farm, ending back at the entrance. It's pretty short.

One really nice thing about the train is that you can just hop on and easily get to an area to do more stuff. The walk isn't long, but the train ride is a nice distraction. Buying a ticket gets you on all day and a ride pass gets you on the train, the Model Ts, the carousel and the horse-drawn buses all day. I can't imagine us going and not riding as much as we can. It's a huge hit for the boys, that's for sure. It does make stroller management critical, though.

We also went into the museum this time. That's my first time in there. It's packed full of historical transportation. Maybe more on that the next time.

Photos from our trip in June are here.

Well, we had to bail on a planned wine trail excursion but we salvaged the weekend with another visit to Dearborn, MI.

Left the camera in the car both days, though.

Rode the train when it was less than 50F this morning. But the cold helped drive us away from transportation and more toward the exhibits which are buildings. So we saw a machine shop Henry Ford bought. We saw the Wright Brothers' bike shop and a store from the 1800s. And we saw the glassworks in full production.

We're planning another trip there in December. It's that good.

This is a three hour drive for us. In the same time, we could be at the Indianapolis Children's Museum, the Columbus Zoo or any of the Chicago children's attractions. And we choose Detroit. Four visits this year.
