2010 World Cup
1 Year, 11 Months ago
I found out that my cousin's clinic in Santa Monica is hosting some of the USMNT players doing rehab before the tournament starts in June. He and his brother's are heading to South Africa and I'm jealous. But owning the clinic is an indicator of where they are in life. If I didn't have kids, I cold probably consider taking up an invitation to go along.

So, we're ready. We've got the 42" LCD and HD Tivo. The bars that are showing the game in kid-friendly territory are picked out. We'll even try to make a run to Columbus, OH to join the crowds that assemble as they show all of the matches under a tent at Crew Stadium. I've done that since they started in 2002.

The US has a hard road to make it past the round of 16. In 2002, they managed to make it past Mexico and then lost to Germany in the quarter finals. If everything works as expected, they'll lose to England in their first round robin match and both teams will win out. The US will face Germany in the round of 16 (DuOctagonal finals?). But we COULD beat England or we COULD beat Germany. It's hard to imagine we would, though.

Any plans to watch some World Cup with your soccer kids?

I was just mentioning to my wife that it's a shame that our baby isn't due until the end of August, because it means he or she will miss the World Cup. But she reminded me of our fledgling plans to make a family trip to Poland, where if we plan it for 2012, we can catch the European Championships. This year's tournament should be quite interesting though. Always fun to see who the "Cinderella" team will be. I'm keeping my eye on Ivory Coast, Ghana, and S. Korea. I always root for the Dutch, English, and American teams. I would root for my ancestral teams, Iceland and Scotland, if they could ever make it to an international tournament. I think the teams to beat, if they can get their affairs in order, are Spain, Argentina, Germany, and France. Can't wait.

Which channels are carrying the games? I know my kids will be interested since they all play. Will it be on ESPN?

Yes. I would assume it will be on ABC/ESPN. I don't know if Setanta or Fox Soccer might get some games too. It is nice to see soccer slowly getting HD coverage though.

ESPN bought the rights, so it'll be on ABC/ESPN all the way up to The Ocho, I'm sure.

soccernet.espn.go.com/world-cup/?cc=5901&ver=us

They have game times listed.

Beckham is out. Somehow I think England will be just fine. That is, as long as there aren't anymore scandals, and Rooney stays fit (although, that's more of a hope for United's success than England's).

As a Canadian soccer fan from Toronto its tough for me to cheer for the U.S. since most of the MLS players we love to hate are on the USMNT,

BUT

this year for different reasons I am hoping the US and England are the two teams that come out of that group.

All the Best to the USMNT in the group stage and beyond!

Less than a month to go. I am trying to figure out how I'll take the boys with me to Columbus to attend one of the viewing parties. We'll skip doing one o the US matches. Duncan will be able to be given some running room that way. the next time around, we can go without a stroller!

It's getting down to crunch time. Any predictions? I told the folks at my local that as of tonight, I predict Spain to take it, but I'm still looking for England and Holland to do well. The US had a terrible game against a 2nd rate Czech team, which does not bode well.

Mostly, I just want to see some good footy. But I'm Sam's Army through and through.

Unfortunately, seeing Peter Crouch play against Mexico, I can't imagine us tieing them. So the US will play a weak (for Germany) German team in the round of 16 and will lose 1-nil or something like that.

That frees me up to just watch the game.

8 days, well less.

US v England June 12.
ABC, MOBILETV
2:30 ET

This might be the most watched match of the World Cup, pre-elimination. America's play in the Confederations Cup was bad at first, but once they snuck into the quarter finals, they turned it on. We'll see if they can get a strong start, finally. A tie would be as good as a win since it would be against the team likely to win the group in Round Robin play.

Well, we survived. 1-1. As long as something doesn't get out of hand in the next two games, we on to the elimination round.

Now I can relax and watch the rest of the games.

That US goal gave us a startled baby who took nearly half an hour to calm down.

Been interesting so far. Germany have certainly been the most impressive. I thought the US-England game was pretty lackluster on both accounts. Although Tim Howard and Stevie Gerrard both showed their quality. England's Achilles' Heel is definitely their goalkeeping. Both teams still have to watch out for Slovenia. Here was the scene at our local pub: www.wmur.com/video/23882303/index.html
The pub is open at 9:30 every morning, serving full English breakfast. It's pretty sweet. I'm enjoying being able to catch the majority of the games this time 'round. Love it. I'm about to watch a replay of the Dutch/Danish match.

I'm enjoying these games way too much. All my time watching youth soccer is really paying off. Or costing me dearly. One of the two.

You're not buying the 3D Pay-Per-View, are you? Now that would be too much!

There's some quality footy going on. The Danes v the Dutch was fun since the Danes went up early and the Dutch had to play catch up. Seeing Italy suffer an early goal was fun, too. Of course they equalized, but seeing them sweat was refreshing. The US isn't looking horrible yet.

I'm not usually a soccer guy but I've kinda been into it. Between USA getting robbed, the Italy vs New Zealand tie and Portugal blowing out North Korea 7-0 It's been great to watch.

I'm glad to see a lot of folks are getting into the World Cup this year. Although, I wish it was a little less controversial, what with the sub-par officiating (which is a growing concern all over the place. I'm actually starting to wonder if the refs are purposefully blowing calls to passive-aggressively make a case for replay or a fifth official), the vuvuzelas (which I really don't have a problem with), the implosion of the big-name teams (I'm talking about you, France), and the generally low goal-scoring (at least until yesterday). But sometimes controversy makes for good viewing.

Now is when the tournament really begins. Teams now have to fight for their lives. Granted the Mexico-Uruguay game has the potential to be really uninteresting. Both teams only need a draw to advance, so they could just pass the ball around to one another for 90 minutes if they wanted. I'd really like to see both teams to go through, so I'm actually rooting for that draw.

Tomorrow morning at the pub should be quite a spectacle, as the England and US games are on at 10am. I think I'll skip the madness this time, but you never know...

I felt so good about today. I had it set up. I had a pocket of cash for the bar. The boys woke at the right time for naps to be perfect for spending the morning at Grandpa's. Well, we got over there and he wasn't around. Pulling out of the drive, Duncan lost it. That lasted a good, strong hour. Milk and some pumpkin cake I made a couple days ago took more than 30 minutes to have any effect. I got to watch the first half of both games at home with a whining toddler, but I count myself lucky to have gotten that far.

So, both matches are waiting for me on the Tivo. The US game didn't get recorded intially. The Tivo seems to think that the games I most want to watch have already been recorded. But I made the save and I have it and the England match to watch while spooling up the Germany v Ghana match.

Once the boys got to bed for naps (20 minutes) I'm finishing up those games in FF and hopefully relaxing during a Germany victory with enough goals to keep Serbia from meeting the spread.

So far, so good.

Amazing finish! Such a crazy day. On the way home I was asked TWICE if I had watched the game and what the score was. What a world of difference from previous World Cups.

The England fans at the pub were in full voice. It's always nice to hear real football chants and songs. The pub was divided in half, with the US game on one side and the England game on the other. The best part was when the English came over after the US goal for a rousing round of "We're goin' through, goin' through, goin' thorugh... goin' through, goin' through, goin' through..." (think Stars and Stripes Forever, ironically. I still find it funny when the English sing En-Guh-Land to the same tune.)

So much fun!

Had a quarter of the near misses gone in without penalty, we'd be up 6-nil!

Even knowing the result, I'm tense. Trying to keep the baby from crying when something good happens.

Oh well, baby's crying anyway.

I work for a very multi national company with many nationalities represented here at the HQ. We have a couple big screens perpetually dialed in to the games and the place erupted at 92'. It breaks the monotony of updating Excel.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
