Finding time for exercise with a baby
1 Year, 4 Months ago
Hello everyone I was wondering if other parent have found it hard to find time to exercise with a new baby in the house. My wife and I would like some advice from other parent that have ran into this problem. Any tips would be great thanks.

We found it's best to take turns. Our baby is almost 1 yr old. My wife is back to her pre-pregnancy weight and still going lower. I lost my sympathy gain and also going lower.

I also got a elliptical right at home and put it in our living room for my wife to use. But the key is not to push your wife. Do activities that you like to do (for me Tennis) and take turns. Like Monday, Wednesday, Saturday for me and Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday you get the idea. Start slow activities like walking together also help a lot. But most important thing is not to push your wife.

When our son was a newborn, we took him for a lot of walks around the neighborhood in our Ergo.

These days he's too heavy to carry on extended walks, so when we go walking with him, he's in the stroller. Pretty soon he'll be walking, and that will yet again change the dynamics of our family walks.

Whether this works for you, I guess, depends on the weather in your part of the country, and whether walking is the type of exercise you want to do. (Maybe you'd rather be doing pushups or going to the gym).

Good luck...

Baby time is EASY! It's easy to find a gym that had child care. It may limit the time you can go, but it worked well for me. With two older kids, it's been more difficult. When I drop them off for preschool, I have 2 hours (and up to half an hour more) to get somewhere to work out. It sounds like a lot of time, but take away half an hour to get there and another half hour back and then all the prep and clean up and I'd be lucky to get 20 minutes in. And it would be unsatisfying. At least that's what I've been thinking. We'll see in a couple weeks. The gym that's most affordable doesn't have childcare, so that limits the other days for me.

But check your local gyms. I bet you'll find childcare as one of the big selling points.

Depends of course what type of exercising you want to do.

I have a full-time job, so my exercising times are just before going to office and then right after getting back home from work.

Morning exercises means that I wake up early (5-6 AM) so that I can hit the gym.

Evening ones are also manageable too, when my wife knows when I'm getting back home.

Then there are common times together where a whole family is taking a walk. Next summer I'm also looking forward to buy a bike trailer, so we can all start biking together too

I'm a triathlete and marathon runner, so there is plenty of exercising on a daily basis. But with morning workouts, good communication and some flexibility (both parents), exercising is possible (just make sure your wife has her own time too

Cheers,
Timo

Going on walk with our kids is the best. This way kid gets outing and we get exercise.

Our boy can watch himself, but we don't leave him incharge of the 5 y/o. maybe when he is 11 or 12, (he's 9 now).

For the most part, we take turns. I'm a triathlete and this takes a lot of training. We now have the oppertunity for mom to be a Domesitic Engineer and this will allow us to take turns, but my turn is longer.
