TOPIC: DadLabs Weight Loss Challenge 2010-11

@DaddyClay Congrats! While I understand the urge to buy new jeans right away, might I humbly suggest that you let your body get used to its new set point for a while? Speaking from personal experience, it can be a rather deflating experience to feel those new jeans get tight as you bounce back a little from a big loss.

As for me, I won't be checking in this week. I've been out of town at a conference. Aside from having no scale, I haven't been eating well and shudder to think how I might have regressed. I'll work extra hard Thurs-Sun and weigh in again on Monday.

Howdy folks,

First, congrats to everyone for hanging in this long and all your achievements. It serves as an encouragement for me to read about all your progress and stumbles.

I am back to my start weight of 270, which is a loss for the last week or two.
The running has been spotty because of illness and schedules, but the diet has started to come together.
The wife has started a GD type diet which is lots of high glycemic-index foods (veggies) and she has started tracking with me which has gotten me back to my food journal.

I'm behind pace for the month on my running goal but I have two weeks to make it up.

@pfanndad Hang in there. I think it's cool that you've got a co-diet going with your spouse. I'm jealous of that.

I can tell my wife is getting to the end of her patience with my exercise routine. Even though I work out at times that she would never claim (before 7am), she is starting to get irritated by the perception of imbalance.

"I'm getting out exercised 10 to 1," she said bitterly in a recent conversation.

Losing the weight and shaving my beard have her making little jokes about "mid-life crisis" and "chickies." It's all in good fun, and I don't necessarily think it means I have to change, I'm just feeling it and wishing we were on the same team on this.

@funkydung You point is well taken. I don't want to be the guy with the two distinct sections in his closet: fat clothes and skinny clothes.

Still not losing on the scale but can feel changes in how some clothes fit.
Ran 9k on Friday, longest run yet. Felt good.

Any runners have any recommendations for inner thigh chafing solutions? I've used body glide but it was useless. Now I'm using baby powder pre run and vaseline post run.

@dougj I use BodyGlide, so I don't have any alternatives for you. However, if you live somewhere that gets cold during the winter, I highly recommend compression undies. IIRC, mine are UnderArmor. Not only will they keep your junk warm, but they create a barrier against chub rub.

I think Funky's suggestion on the compression shorts is a good one. I've been having an equally charming problem with bleeding nipples on longer runs.

@dougj I've been following your progress on Nike+ and you are really doing a great job with the running. Very impressive ramp that you are on.

One cautionary note, When I started training for my first race about a year ago, I started adding mileage too quickly and ended up getting a series of injuries that almost knocked me out of my races. I think that I was adding mileage too quickly. Like you, while I was getting in much better shape, I did not lose weight through my training -- I ran my half-marathon at 205lbs.

One of the big motivations for losing weight this year was to prevent injury. When the runs get over 5 miles on a regular basis with the weight still up, I think the risk of injury is pretty high. When the gun goes of for my PR attempt in this year's Austin Half marathon, I'm hoping to be 180 lbs. If I can't set a PR carrying 25 lbs less, there is something wrong.

So be careful and ramp your miles carefully -- I've heard that adding a mile a week is about right.

Hey thanks, I'm pretty happy with my increases but I'm trying to be careful with adding too much too soon. I do not want another injury. I've decided that I'd like to up my regular to 7k (at 6.25 now) and my long run to 10k. So that will be in about 3 weeks. I'm going to stay at that level for awhile. That should be enough for me to burn a decent amount of calories per week.
They say you shouldn't add more than 30% of your regular run to your long run so I'm on target there. Running those distances at my weight is a concern but I'm taking it slow. Speed isn't a concern right now.

Mornin' all.

Last week 244
This week: 240.5

Argh! Just can't seem to flip that middle digit!

Pleased to say that I found some time for exercise and it's helped, but my goal, even before joining this challenge was to be down to 230 by Nov 30. That looks like it's in serious jeopardy. That's going to be tough to accept.

On the up side, after 7.5 mos of exercise, I am pleased that my fitness level has improved to a point that riding my bike roughly 30 miles a week no longer has a positive impact on my weight. So it's safe to say my fitness level has definitely improved. Now to get to that next level.

My eating habits have definitely changed for the better too. Saturday night, I actually threw out left over Chinese takeout and willingly opted for a dinner of fresh fruit. What's the big deal you ask? Six months ago there never would have been any left overs!

Seriously trying to figure out how to get through Thanksgiving weekend. Anyone else dreading it? I'm contemplating hibernating through it. I've had to block the Food Network entirely on our TV.

Have a good week all.

Weight unchanged from last week.

But that probably means an actual loss. Have you observed fluctuations that seem to recur every week? I'm usually heaviest on Monday, diminishing all week, then bouncing up a bit on the weekend. Anyway, consolidation is fine with me this week.

*Breaking News* Rumor has it that Daddy Brad is FINALLY going to join the challenge for real. Weighed in and started running today. We shall see...

As far as T-giving is concerned, I have to confess that Turkey doesn't scare me all that much. It's just one meal, after all. The leftover bird is good clean protein. I'll cut myself some slack on Thursday.

Mon 11/08: 184.8lbs (24.8% fat)
this week: 186.4lbs (24.3% fat)

Ugh. Stupid conference with all its eating out and drinking with friends.

I'd hoped yesterday's workout would offset a lot of that. I ran 2hrs pushing 2 toddlers in a double stroller most of the way. Man, that's one hell of a workout! We really put the "slow" in "long slow distance", though.

Ok. It's official I'm in. Starting weight is 190. While that is 25 lbs lighter than my heftiest of all time ( I've lost tons of muscle mass since rupturing a disk 10 months ago) I am in the absolute worst shape of my life and look about eight months pregnant. And for that matter Daddy Clay weighs less than I do, and that's enough to make the earth spin off it's axis. My plan is to start on the exercise part (ran 3.5 miles yesterday and about stroked out) and introduce a reasonably healthy diet. Diet amy not be in full swing until after turkey day cause I do love me some Pumpkin Pie.

I will also lose 12 lbs immediately upon shaving my sweet Stache!

@DaddyBrad "welcome to the party, Pal!" Look forward to hearing about your progress.

@DaddyClay --I don't normally weigh in day-to-day. I get too obsessive, if I do. I've only been weighing myself weekly, so I don' have day to day or weekly trends to compare.

That being said, seeing your progress, and presuming that you're tracking things at a far more disciplined level than I am, I think I'm going to do it a couple times a week.

And with that in mind -- I got on the scale this morning and I have flipped another digit on the scale.

I weighed in at 239.5 today!

Totally recognize that that's the equivalent of about a forkful of salad, or not, but I'm really stoked.

Just seeing that 3 in the middle of my weight is really giving my motivation and my attitude a lift.

Great posts, everyone.
I hope we can all weather the holidays with a minimum of damage.
I personally plan on keeping to my balanced portions for our family feasts.
Though for me it's never been about just Thanksgiving dinner. There's meals on both sides of that event that make the diet explode, not to mention that I'll have as many cocktails over the next few days as I would have in a few months otherwise.

So here it is.....
266 (-4)

I'm still behind pace for my goal for November but the diet has been well under control.
Have to give props to my wife for that.
If she weren't tracking with me, I don't think I'd be doing half as well, which I guess makes her my better half.

p.s.
Brad, when you shave that 'stashe, I think you'll pick up about :30/mile easy just in aerodynamics.

@pfanndad

I hear you on the extra meals. My son was off from school yesterday, so I met the wife and my boy for lunch. We went to an upscale lunch place that specializes in gourmet pizza. You can guess what happens next. (Worth it. Had such a blast talking with the big guy. He brought along one of his hilarious little buddies. Awesome time.)

The we had another family over for Taco Tuesday last night -- fish tacos all around.

So pizza (vegetarian) and tacos (fish) all in one day. This is how diets get blown.

Penance this AM: 5 miles sub 8min. + 4 X 200m sprints

Well hey now.
272 on the scale this morning, down 1. Glad to see the scale move. I've started adjusting my diet to where it should be and gaining control over night time eating.
7k run this morning, went as good as it could, I still have a bit of a cold.
