TOPIC: Stand up son, no wait, sit down!

Stand up son, no wait, sit down!
4 Years, 1 Month ago
My boy is ~10 months. Over the weekend we had him afternoon napping in his crib and the wife and I were taking a break as well watching a little TV in our bedroom. Over the monitor we heard a noise and assumed he was starting to wake up. So I picked up the monitor to watch him and he was kneeling on his matress while trying to pull himself up by the crib rail. No worries because he's been struggling on that and as far as we knew, had never pulled himself up to a standing position all by himself. Besides it was cute to watch. It was that point which he chose to reach that milestone and we watched him over the monitor pull himself up to standing while holding on the rail. Then I realized how unexpectedly tall he was in comparison to the rail and that had he chose to really lean over it, he could have gone over.

I got that little panic a parent feels when you sense imminent doom or at the very least a mild ouchie is about to befall your kid. Luckily we managed to get to the nursary in time and he just stared at our huffy entry like, what's all the hubbub about? Lowering the matress on the crib became the priority of the day and good thing too because after he pulled himself up the first time, he's seemed to master it over the last couple days and his crib now doubles as a playpen if he wakes up before we do.

Has any of your kids met a milestone at a fairly inconvinient moment to put then in somewhat of a dangerous situation unexpectedly?

What kind of video monitor were you using? Sounds like one that works really well!

I always took lots of pictures right before the kids learned to walk, because as soon as they hit that milestone they started hitting everything in the house as well. Black eyes and purple forehead knots became standard issue. The first four months after walking -- painful.

Summer Infant Day and Night Handheld Color Video Monitor we bought at Babies R Us about 5 months ago.

www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?produc...t;br>
We weren't comfortable with just a sound monitor and there have been a couple times like this weekend when sound alone just wasn't good enough. When he was 5 months he had this habit of pulling the blankets on top of his head and he could have stayed that way for a long time had we not been able to see him. And having a handheld rocks because we can watch him napping from anywhere in the house and the bedrooms are upstairs. We mounted the camera on the wall over his crib.

We solved the blanket problem by using switching to swaddles and sleepsacks (needed in the Winter months). I figure we'll go back to blankets after he turns a year old and has the coordination to move the blankets on his own. Once we got the hand held and got used to it (we tried a few) we felt comfortable putting him in his own room to sleep at night. That was about 4 or months ago.

Duncan seemed to enjoy showing us his new teeth by biting us on the kneecaps when we weren't paying attention. Otherwise, nothing that put him in danger. We moved the mattress down well in advance of his climbing.

Ella began crawling out of her crib by using the bumper and taking a tumble on a regular basis so it was onto to a big girls bed well before we had the time or money to make the purchase. Now she just falls out of her big girl bed even with the bed rail, but it is a lot closer to the floor so less traumatic falls!

Our daughter has just recently learned to pull herself up on things. However it was very rarely. One evening I took her out of the bath and put her in her crib to dry her off. After getting her ready I realized all the pajamas were downstairs and I needed to go get one. I left the rail down (not thinking that she could stand now). As I got a pair of pajamas out of the dryer I heard a thud upstairs. As I realized what had happened I sprinted up the stairs and got there just as she realized she had fallen from the crib and started crying. She had to have fallen out and landed right on her head. We were so worried and I felt horrible so we called the doctor, who assured us that a fall from that height had a low probability of actually hurting her. Plus I remember that both my brother and I fell down our basement steps and turned out all right (I think)

So I guess I would feel lucky that you realized before he went tumbling over. Just don't forget from now on to put the rail back up on the crib.

Our boy is now 7 months and about 2 weeks ago he got onto his knees and tried to pull himself up in the bath, but did not manage at first. Since then he has been crawling to anything he can hold on to and tries to stand up. So we have really had to keep an eye on him at all times, also so we dont miss the first time:) This got us thinking about the crib, luckly we lowerd it as quite soon me managed to stand up one morning while we were waking up. It is quite suprising how tall they are! He just stood there smiling at us all proud of himself:) Now he cant stop. He loves going over to the tv stand to pull himself up. We have these socks with these little small rubber spots underneath that seem to help him as we have laminate flooring which is slippery. He has not really mastered sitting down to well yet, comes down with a litlle thud.

He did catch is out with sitting up though. We saw him do it and I guess we thought he was ok, which was not to true as he did not keep his balance and did full back. He hit his head and had a little cry. This was a little warning to us as first time parents not to think 'now he's up he is fine and will stay up'.

My son got out of his crib at 13 months. We realized that it had another 2 inches to be lowered. We did that and also loosened the bumper pad b/c he was using that to help boost himself out.
Another option is the crib tents. I have heard from a few people that they work very well.
He is now 14 1/2 months old. This will be my next option if he gets out again.
Here are some sites for crib tents:
