Is $300 for a mini kid sized toilet worth it?
3 Years, 9 Months ago
*

At my kids preschool they have real porcelain kid sized toilets. These smaller toilets make it so easy for kids to get on them, and then not fall in. Kids don't have to stand on stools. No pee-trapping toilet seat inserts. Boys don't have as many problems with painting the floor yellow. Overall it allows a kids to take control of their daily bodily functions.

Veteran parents: If cost was not an issue - would having one of these potty's in your own home have made potty training and post-potty training easier?

Parents of difficult-to-train-kids: How far would you go to potty train your kid? How much are spending on diapers and throw away underwear?

Everyone: Is this not worth doing and simply an example of us modifying our world too much for our children?

As for cost $300 and that does not include installation. Of course installing a toilet is easy. So you really should not have to pay for that.

My thought is that I really wish I had installed one when my kids were of age. Here is what I would have done. I buy it for $300 and then sell it to a friend for $250 with the understanding that he or she will sell it someone else for $200 and then on down the line. Kind of like a toilet co-op.
If cost wasn't an issue, it is possible that I would do a great many things differently, but I still don't know if I'd blow $300 on a toilet.

We have three kids. I suppose, if it was your first child, or if you had several children who were very close in age (read: as fast as you could have them--multiples or 9 months apart), it might be practical.

For us, our kids are spaced an even 3 and a half years each. This means, my youngest would be thrillled with a toilet just her size, but my older kids wouldn't be as thrilled about it. (Yes, they share a bathroom. Also, because of our house layout, the kid's bathroom is also the 'guest bathroom'...I'm guessing the guests wouldn't enjoy the tiny potty, either.)

It *is* a good idea for a daycare or a family with mulitples or someone who will get a lot of use out of it, but for me, it isn't. I hate cleaning kid-potties and converter seats as much as the next person, but I just can't reasonably go for a $300 mini-toilet that would suit just one person in the household. Wow, that's cool!! We're not yet in the potty-training stage, but I am going to keep this in mind. It would even match our teeny-tiny bathroom!!

(Maybe if we could also get a tiny sink and tiny shower that would make the whole bathroom look bigger??)

As for cost, I wouldn't blink an eye at dropping $300 on this (real toilets are about $150, so it's reasonable to expect that a low volume speciality product like this would have a 100% price premium). I think it's a fair price. Can you post or send a link to the manufacturer, please?

I think it's a great idea. But it's not the cost... it's the house. This really requires an entirely separate bathroom for the kiddo(s). If I had a spare bathroom (or half bath)... I'd install this for sure. This should actually be EASIER to install than a normal toilet... 'cause you can manuever it much easier.

Yeah, I hear that. But there's nothing stopping Daddy from still using the kid toilet at least for #1, right?

I'm with you. If there was a bathroom used almost exclusively by kids, this would be cool. Although there is something fun about imagining the dinner party guests heading to the john and being confronted by a mini-toilet. Can you say potty-cam?

Here are some links. Note that these small toilets seem to go in and out of production as they are specialty items. My best suggestion is to call a plumbing supply warehouse in your area. Even better, get a plumber or contractor friend to order one for you and get a discount since he or she would get the professional discount.

Eljer
Antique Plumbing
Home Depot
Plumber Surplus
Waterworks

Word of advice to others: Watch out for the American Standard product. It has a non-standard 10 rough-in (hard installation).

Just got off the phone with my wife. We're totally putting one of these things in.

Yes, we will lament the loss of the 2nd full size toilet. However, the bathroom is really small and doesn't have any room for a traditional stand-alone kids potty anyway. The way we see it, if we DON'T install this kiddie size toilet, then we will be seriously annoyed and grossed out as we trip over the portable plastic potty continuously in our teeny-tiny hallway bathroom.

And as for sleepover guests....well that mostly consists of grandparents, so we think they'll be able to deal with the inconvenience of using the other bathroom.

I will post pics when it is in!!!

We do have twins who will be potty training soon, but I still don't think we'll go so far as to install a mini-toilet. The only bathroom where it would make sense to put it in is the only bathroom downstairs and it's the most used camode in the house so I don't want to give it up for kiddie only use. It just doesn't make sense for our house layout.

I may eat my words once we start toilet training though!

I guess if you had room it would be a consideration. For us it just wouldn't fit. I also have to wonder if kids who get adapted to this just my size throne would have trouble transitioning to the larger ones they'd find at school or in other homes. But we won't need to worry about that.

I think most everyone is saying about the same thing - great idea but the cost and the need for a 2nd bathroom makes this a luxury for many people. We used the same technique that my parents used for me - that little donut like thing tht sat on top of the toilet and hand handles and a little splash guard for the boys. Not as custom as the toilet but a lot cheaper.

How about a good way to teach kids to flush and wash? like an alarm that goes off if there is something in there and the lights go out?

Kaboom ME! I need the points with the wife.

i just don't know about that, its sounds like a good idea, but then again wrapping everything in bubble wrap so your kids don't get hurt sounds like a good idea too.

it seems a bit over the top, the way i figure millions (billions even) of people have successfully learned how to potty without such a luxury item, i think we can get by without one.

My wife is an interior designer, and there are other options. There are adult/child combination seats on the market now. The top seat is a child size seat, and the seat beneath it is an adult size seat. They only cost about $50, and I'm sure there are some that are cheaper than that. Then all you have to worry about is a little step stool for your little one. Actually, my wife just showed me a complete set on Target.com that comes with the toilet seat lid, the child's seat, the adult seat, and the step stool, and it only costs $34.99.

For us, this would make much more sense, but then we have an 11yo, 5yo, and 6 week old, so we have multiple sizes, and unless we lived had a bathroom for just the two youngest, I couldn't see spending $300 or even $165 on a new temporary toilet, when a step stool and one of these babies, would likely do it for us.

Now if all my kids were closer in age, then maybe I'd have considered it when they were all young and if they had their own bathroom.

Price update for anyone that's interested: We visited Lowe's over the weekend and found that you can order a Kohler model for only $165 (including the seat).

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
