TOPIC: When is too long, too long?

When is too long, too long?
3 Years, 6 Months ago
Went to a good friends wedding this weekend. A Catholic Wedding. If you know anything about Catholic Weddings you know they are long, really long. There is the wedding itself, which is longer than most Protestant weddings (here's the bride, here's the ring, let's go party) and then there is an entire church service following the nuptials, with communion.

My kids did great (5 1/2 and 2 1/2) made it through 45 minutes of the ceremony. But I saw the melt down coming and bolted to parking lot during the ring blessing and spent the next hour playing tag in the parking lot.

The question: What's the longest time toddlers should be expected to sit still and behave in an adult oriented service?

HA! Yes! Indeed. They do some stuff in triplicate - just in case it doesn't take the first 2 times!

I have to agree with Sean, having attended a Coptic(Egyptian) orthodox wedding ceremony which was firstly conducted in the coptic language (a forerunner to modern egyptian) and secondly lasted for about 2 1/2 hours. I guess it was culturally interesting but if kids had been at that ceremony they would have certainly experienced meltdown, big time!

What happens if he says yes in one but no in the other?

I think you did well with 45 minutes, particularly with those ages... But I really don't know yet. At 9 months, Indy generally makes it through an hour service, no problem. And usually with a 10-15 minute nap in there…

When I was about 8 months pregnant, I went to a Baptist wedding. OMG-
I thought the baby was going to come before they finished that service. Seriously, thank God we didn't have a kid with us. I couldn't even imagine taking my 23 month old to anything that lasts longer than half an hour. He won't even sit still for the 15 mins of dinner.

The only thing longer than a Baptist Wedding is the reception following the service. Cause it's dry!

One side of my family is Baptist, so I speak from experience. I married an Episcopalian, not dry!

I once went to a bi-lingual Catholic Wedding. Everything was done in both languages along with some added Spanish traditions too. It was clocked at over 2 hours!

I think your kids did great for that amount of time. Ideally I would put it at 7.5 minutes for every year.

My 2.3 year old will allow 10 minutes if it's boring, really boring. IF there is some entertainment value in the adult service I can bump it to 30-40 minutes. Maybe 45 if I have some quiet toys. Much also depends on his general mood, food intake before the event, and tired/energy level.

So occasionally I get some clients that say hey why don't you bring your family to the wedding. We thank them graciously and mention that the wife & kids may join us for the celebration after. I think the key is to know your kids, My girls now will sit through a wedding if I hand them a camera and let them help Dad if I'm shooting. (Which I usually am) A few years ago it was standard for us to have them show up at the reception only. If you have to bring them with you because of family obligations bring fun stuff too. Coloring books, noiseless toys. I even bring my Zune when I shoot loaded with kids movies for that rambunctious ring bearer or flower girl. Even without headphones kids know what Shrek is saying. During Formals I plug in the portable speakers & viola I keep them happy until we need them for formals. I would suggest you hold off on giving the stuff until you notice the rumblings of chaos beginning.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
