Well You Turned OK, sort of.
3 Years, 7 Months ago
My parents are delightful people and wonderful grandparents. They shower the kids with love, affection, and gifts, (tons of gifts) like grandparents are allowed to do. They are also eager to lend a hand with the kids, whenever called upon, making life easier for me and Mom. However, they are of a different generation and hold different parenting philosophies than parents of today. Sometimes this leads to controversy. For example, we are teaching our young ones to call a penis a penis and a vagina, well you know, a vagina, for multiple reasons. Partly because that is what they are. Teaching a three year old such graphic descriptions of body parts is apparently not a parenting philosophy of old.

Any one else run into the parenting generation gap with the grandparents.

When our daughter was very young, maybe a few months old, she was absolutely horrible in the car, and screamed at the top of her lungs for long periods of time. There was really nothing anybody else in the car could do except grit their teeth and try to go to their happy place.

So....one day we're driving along and Grandma (my Mom) happens to be in the car with us. A full-scale Defcon 1 screaming meltdown ensues, and I try to explain to my Mom that there's really nothing that can be done. Well, this answer didn't sit well with her. And after about another 10 minutes, my Mom turns to us and asks if maybe we could take our daughter out of the car seat for just a little while (we were driving about 55MPH on a major road).

So I think maybe car safety has changed a bit between the generations...!!

omg, a very similar thing just happened to us this week. We were visiting my folks. We were just down the road from the house when my mother takes off her seatbelt because we were close enough. Well, this makes my 21 month old decide to start crying out buckle-buckle! (wanting to unsnap the buckle on his car seat). My mother then proceeds to reach over & start to undo his buckle. I flipped out.
She couldn't understand why I was so upset. My husband just had this look of shock on his face & told me later that he couldn't imagine why she would think it's ok to unbuckle a child before the car was stopped?!

Ha Ha! Yeah that much pretty describes the scene in our car too! Shock, horror and outrage all mixed together!

My MiL suggested early on that we use her homemade formulas mix that she used with her children. THEN she looked it up! It was Sweetened, Condensed Milk and Karo Syrup! Corn Syrup is pure evil, especially at a young age. And she thought that it would save money, but it would have been a lot more work and not have saved much at all. We also found out that she started feeding cereal through a bottle at two weeks and when my wife had crying fits (probably colic) early on, she went to the doctor for a narcotic... FOR MY WIFE! Things have certainly changed. Now she doesn't seem to insist on these things for long, but she frequently starts a thought with Well, when that happened with you I ... and I just know my wife is going to blow a gasket.

And don't get me started on my FiL! It's just a good thing they haven't been married in decades!

Oh well, I can at least add one from the FiL.

Apparently, he's shopping for car seats for his corvette... which he's had five accidents in.. and three speeding tickets... in less than two years... and then there's this tumor that presses against his optic nerve that makes him nearly legally blind, at least blind enough to be getting disability and a handicap plate.

Do Corvettes even have a backseat? LOL! Seriously YIKES!

My dad hasn't offered any advice (and I don't suspect he will), and my Mom hasn't either really, but she has brought over magazines or pointed out something she heard about, but nothing from their generation of parenting. And never any of the you should do this kinda thing. They both seem to have confidence that either I'll do ok, or at least figure it out... There hasn't been too many opportunities for needing advice yet, as I said, the kid is AWESOME! I'm tellin' ya, suckering me into the second one.

There are these guys on the web who keep introducing me to all these things I just need to have. I feel like they're dragging me into a new generation of child accessories. Anyone else have the same problem?

After recently returning from one of the largest baby and kid products trade shows in the world, we are thinking of doing a show called You don't need that Shit! There are plenty of useless items to feature. Granted there are numerous high quality, essential infant and kid products that make our lives as parents a bit easier, and our kids a bit safer. But these days, there seems to be just as many that make you say You gotta be %&*#ing kidding me. Give it up for old school quality. I'm going to but a pair to Chuck Taylor's right now!

What's better is the scaring you into thinking you must buy this stuff if you want your child to be safe. Ug-didn't you have that topic before? Makes me want to beat those advertisers over the head. Or, of course, playing on the you're a horrible parent if you don't buy your kid one of these products.

The old advertiser cliche, as everyone knows, is sex sells. But when it comes to baby crap, I think danger sells is far more accurate!

Of course, I wrote this while a picture of a hot mommy adorned the BabyBjorn advertisement about 100 pixels to the right. So maybe maybe not everyone has reverted to using danger to sell!

Well all of us look JUST like her with our brand new baby. I mean, c'mon. See, & my husband wonders why I whine more than my child about how unfair the pictures of new moms are. Shoot-that skinny, no bags under her eyes, perfect hair, makeup, etc. woman should be hurt. Oh wait, did I just post this on a Dad site? Crap-no sympathy here. :-P

The problem with that ad....let's face it, women make the purchases most of the time on this stuff. No mom is gonna buy it because we're all too hateful of the woman in the pic! LOL!

But guys are hoping that's the kid's single-no-kid-havin'-super-rich-nymphomaniac-aunt anyway. Or is that just me?

I think your idea needs just a little bit of fine tuning...

Here's what I think you should do: Send out a mass e-mail to all potential future sponsors that says Sponsor us or else you will be featured in our You don't need that Shit! segment.

See....now THAT would be a good idea!! (but check with a lawyer first, because I'm not sure, but I think there's a slight chance that the courts might recognize that as an illegal extortion scheme....)

I feel responsible for diverting this ship WAY off course. So, sorry about that.

Now, where were we?

I think many of the disconnects with the in-laws has more to do with the contrast between what my wife's sister allows and encourages versus our style. Rumors of Rootbeer floats at three months might give you an idea. But I have not participated in family things with my folks in more than 5 years, so I am told I shouldn't complain..

The Car Safety thing is my big issue with the IL's, they simply don't get it... at ALL.

When your husband was a baby I took him for a ride in the car and I let him sit in the steering wheel. It all was fine and dandy until I tried to make a left hand turn...

I seriously kid you not!!! It really is amazing that my poor sweet hubby survived his childhood.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
