So, what do you guys (and gals) think about this? What informed your decision to schedule vaccinations or not?

Woooooow! I don't know how I didn't know this and I work with the DD community. I knew that it was unable to be proven but I had no idea what a corrupt D-bag that guy was.

We chose to go with the standard vaccine schedule that his pediatrician and the AAP recommends. When we asked the question about the separate vaccines and alternative schedules his Dr. reassured us that it was safe. She told us that her daughter had autism and that she had done extensive research to come to the conclusion that the MMR vaccine and the AAPs recommended vaccination schedule were safe.

Generally I tend to believe that there is always some aspect of truth when it comes to some conspiracy theories. In this case the study was fueled only by greed and not for the well being of children. I trust my sons Dr. even more now. I'll have to ask her about the guy being a corrupt d-bag though. I'm just curious what other pediatricians think of him now.

We decided to go with the standard schedule too. We interviewed three pediatricians, all of whom recommended the schedule. One of them even gave us a paper on the subject to read, she was so emphatic.

Frontline on PBS did a really good episode about the vaccine controversy about a month ago (does that mean I'm officially old? Me watching Frontline?) Anyway they dug into Wakefield pretty hard in the episode. They also talked about a couple of subsequent and really thorough studies that have been done in Denmark. Apparently Denmark National Health service keeps eerily meticulous records of its citizenry.

Anyway one of the studies compared autism diagnosis rate in children who received the MMR and in children who did not. The other compared diagnosis rates in children who received the MRR which was preserved by thymerisol (a mercury derivative) and rates after they introduced the thymerisol free version. Both studies found no difference.

I really sympathize with the parents say their kids were fine before the MMR and were completely different after the MMR. Far be it for me to second guess them, they know they kids children better than anyone else can. More importantly, I recognize that the autism activists genuinely want what is best for children. I just don't see the science to support their claim that the vaccines are the cause of autism.

Here's the DL take.

We did a standard schedule.

The Wakefield thing frustrates me to no end, made worse by the fact that his clinic is right here in Austin, Texas.

Quack.

I'm also not a fan of the Dr. Sears Jr extended plan. Seems like half measures trying to reassure parents with a significant downside risk and no demonstrated benefit.

But I'm an AAP guy and not afraid to admit it.

I just heard a news report that he has lost his licence to practice in the UK. So that leaves him free to practice here? What the hell?

It's not so easy to get license to practice medicine here. He would have to take the USMLE exams and start from the bottom of the ladder as an be an intern all over again.

As the cartoon that started the thread points out, there is also something scary about how the new media landscape can propagate uncurated junk around the world, stuff with no scientific basis, and it takes hold in the public imagination.

It reminds me that w have to teach kids how to filter the information they get. They have to learn to be their own editors. My daughter described that her 3rd grade teacher gave her an assignment to research a subject on Wikipedia. I need to have a follow up on that one. Are they also teaching what Wikipedia is?

Slate's in on it now.

So, he did all sorts of painful procedures to kids without running through an ethics board or sometimes without consent. Then he didn't get the findings he wanted but published papers claiming them as true anyway. When the media wouldn't bite on one thing he changed to another? And people still believe this guy?

This is back in the news and I can't figure out why. Anyone in touch with why it popped up again?

Wakefield is running a counter-offensive, and the media is delighted to give him a platform.

I think that the BMJ is just now getting around to accusing Wakefield of being an "elaborate fraud". Man, nice hustle BMJ.....

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
