TOPIC: Bonding Issues with my 1 year old girl

Bonding Issues with my 1 year old girl
1 Year, 2 Months ago
Hey everyone. I recently had to leave my fiance for a few months due to moving to Ft. Lewis from Fort Hood (were both military). She's planning on heading up here in a few months with the little kiddo but for now were trying to do the long distance thing. I've been having difficulties finding a way to bond with my 1 year old girl. It was easy when I was physically there because I could play with her, tickle her etc. etc and make her happy. Its a confusing thing for me to try to do the same things over the phone or via skype. I'm just not sure what to do to try to bond and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me? Thank you in advance

First of all, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your military service for our country. God Bless you and your family.

I have a 15 month old girl and frankly, I'm not sure there is a way to fully bond without being there. BUT, I would not worry too much about it since there is a short time frame in place.

I would have your fiance put a picture of the three of you in a conspicous place and have mommy point it out daily and name each person in the picture.

I think skype is not a bad idea. Maybe get a copy of her favorite books and while mommy shows her the pages on her end, you can read the words on same page on your end. She will recognize your voice and speech pattern and I would think that can only help her to recognize you later.

And I do think she will warm right up to you upon your reunion and/or shortly thereafter. My MiL hasn't seen our kiddo in months and she just came for a visit. She had a warm reception and then first thing in the morning Olivia jumped right up into grandmas bed for a morning snuggle and book reading. I think at this age, they can re-ignite the flame rather quickly.

Thank you again, and best of luck.

T.Low covered all the bases pretty well. Talk to and tickle her via Skype (using Mom's hands for the tickling). Get a photo (headshot) that Mom can show her when you're away.

I'll add that I think the "record a story" books (from Hallmark I think) are pretty cool. We have a couple of those and have used them the very few times either of us have been away on a trip. TheBoy's eyes just lit up and wanted to read it over and over. There are also greeting cards that can record your voice, as well as picture frames. You could even shoot a video of you reading a story. No need to spend money if you don't want to.

Good luck with the relocation! And welcome to DadLabs!
