Baby Growth
3 Years, 2 Months ago
We had our 6 month check up (postnatal) 2 weeks ago. The nurse told us that he has only grown 7mm when he should have grown 1-2cm. He is going for another checkup in 2 weeks. Do you think this is anything to worry about, has anyone had the same problem?

She's giving you average growth numbers. Without a reason for that discrepency, I see no reason to worry at this point, but I am not a doctor, and my boy was bigger than most for a few check ups and is now just above the average.

Every child grows differently, and as long as he's eating and such, I'd be surprised (and a bit irritated) if they doctor is making you feel like that's a problem without giving you anything more to go on.

Good luck! And CONGRATS!

That's nonsense. It is extremely hard to measure the actual length of a baby....very imprecise science...have you watched them do this?

7mm is only 3mm less than 1cm.

I could go on and on about how non-engineers and non-scientists completely neglect measurement resolution and repeatability in everything that they do (including politics)....but that would just make me look obnoxious... So I would suggest tracking down a metric ruler and geting a sense of how miniscule 3mm is, and then think about how the nurse's measurement is totally dependent on how far out she stretches the legs.

Also, I'm not a doctor either, but I think weight is probably a better indicator than height.

Amen. We take a measurement before we go just to make sure we have valid numbers. At our 6 month appointment, he had shrunk by an inch and a half. When my wife mentioned this to the nurse, she just added half an inch to what his length was at the last appointment. How's that for reliability? At 9 months, the (different) nurse just accepted my wife's measurement, to our relief. we've had him measured with his feet squirming, in an inclined position (and they too the straight line measurement, not following the paper) and while he was sliding down the table. With the care and attention they pay to length, I think it must not matter that much to them. Weight has to be the better indicator. Well, that and developmental milestones. Kids grow so erratically. Our appointments were always a couple weeks ahead of the age, too, so the benchmarks they compared to were off. If he was 5, a couple weeks wouldn't matter, but at 4 months, that's a huge discrepancy. Good thing he was always well beyond the middle stanine.

No worries. They actually stretch the baby out on a flat measuring thing in a relatively inaccurate and unconsistant manner. The measurment can be changed by things like not being alligned exactly perpendicular to the jig they use, or the baby having the head tilted slightly or legs inperceptably buckled a bit. 3mm for a target range is nothing to be concerned about.

Other factors that are not taken into consideration are, whether or not the baby is moving/struggling at the time theyare being measured, if a different nurse/doctor does the measuring each time, parellex error (whether health professional is looking directly down onto the point in the scale where he/she is measuring the baby's extremnity to) and whether the health care professional is left or right eye dominant. Millimeters are so small that one or a comination of any of these factors will give an inaccurate reading. I agree with Nik that as long as the baby is eating and developing well generally, there is nothing to worry about. As you go along you will find your child falls into different percentiles almost every time you go for a check up. Noone develops along the ideal growth graph!

My cousin just had a baby that was premature. When they were measuring it this week after being born 2 weeks they had found the baby had shrunk about 1 cm. They assumed it didn't actually shrink, but wasn't as long as they said it was the first time when they measured it. I agree with everyone else that it is nothing to worry about.

Thanks for all your replies. It helps me as a first time parent to relax a bit. As you said all was fine. He has grown. But he did loose a bit of wait, but this was due to him getting a stomach bug for a few days and it was stopping him from keeping his food down. He is now better and has his chubby belly back? He certainly made up for lost time

We just had our one month well visit and our son's head measured in the 90th percentile with his body and length each charting in the 75th percentile. We were a little taken aback, so we asked does our boy have like ... a giant head or what? The nurse casually replied that the difference between the 75th percentile and the 90th percentile at that age is only one quarter of an inch! Judging by the speed of the measurements of out squirming boy I'd say there is a large margin of error, and not much stock should be put into one set of numbers unless a trend emerges over a couple of visits.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
