weaning
If anyone has any advice on weaning, I'd love to hear it. Our son is about one and a half years old.
He does a lot of comfort nursing and it really impacts my wife's ability to get a good night's sleep. He really fusses when he can't comfort nurse... so we give in, just to try to buy some sleep.

But we are ready to move on from this stage, and want to cut off the milk supply for good. Son has a mouthful of good teeth and has a healthy appetite for all kinds of solid food.

One of our friends said she used lemon juice, applied to herself, to wean her child. Are there any other pro tips?

Thanks...

This final phase can be pretty frustrating. Mom is ready to be DONE! We went through about the same thing with our youngest at about the same time.

We ended up on a pretty regular schedule with just one feeding early morning, then he just started sleeping through the night. This happened pretty organically for us.

Maybe you could set one time for nursing. Any other times, maybe you should offer a bottle. Don't even let the little one around mom until the prescribed feeding. Then phase that one out as well.

You are almost at the end! Hang in there! Normal sleep is in range.

Thanks Clay. Comfort nursing is one of those things that we've relied on as a cure-all to get the little guy to sleep. We have our work cut out for us. Whatever ends up working for us, I will post here.

Well... after months of talking about it, false starts, half-hearted attempts, and so forth, as of Jan 4th we are finally weaned.

We used no tricks or special techniques. My wife finally just couldn't take the sleep loss any more and "it's time", and that was that.

We nursed our son for 26 months, and I feel pretty good about that. That is a long time to reap the physical and emotional benefits of nursing.

It's had an interesting effect on our nighttime routine. Our son, who was used to being nursed to sleep, now takes longer to fall asleep at night. Sometimes up to 90 minutes. But once he's asleep, he sleeps straight for 8-9 hours. We (especially my wife) are all sleeping better now.
