Sippy cup trouble
1 Year, 8 Months ago
I can't figure out why our 9 month old can't drink from a sippy cup. He holds it right. He holds it in his mouth and looks to be drinking, but nothing comes out. Take out the valve and he gets too much. It always ends with crying and frustration all around. It seems that he should be well versed in using a cup at this point. We've tried several versions of cups in case it was an issue with the nipple or the valve type.

Maybe he's not ready. It's opposite to how his brother was. He took to the sippy like he'd done it all his life.

Hey Ben,

I reached out to Avent who makes sippy cups and they put me in touch with a pediatrician. Here is her response and reccomendation of an Avent product that might solve the problem -

Hi there! This is a great question. One of the things I’ve truly come to understand as a pediatrician is that all babies are different; your older son may have gotten the hang of it right away, but that is not always the case. Sippy cups can take time and lots of practice to figure out! Also, 9 months is quite young to transition to a sippy cup; generally transition takes place around 12 months of age.

One recommendation I have is to try out the Philips AVENT Bottle Trainer Kit, an integrated feeding system that allows the bottle, cup, nipples, and spouts to be used interchangeably. This makes the transition process less abrupt by showing your baby what to do step-by-step in an intuitive way.

Also, remember…give it time. Your son will be a sippy cup pro before you know it!

Thanks, Troy.

We came to the same conclusion. What brought us to giving our boy a sippy cup is a conflict of data from multiple sources. I believe that "they" recommend giving a child juice starting at 6 months. But it is also recommended not to give juice in a bottle. So we did juice in a sippy with our first and couldn't figure out the problem with our second boy. He's just not ready.

As far as the Avent system bottles goes, I haven't found any in stores when we looked. I haven't looked in a while but I'm sure we looked at Target and Babies-R-Us a couple years ago, perhaps more recently. When you guys did the episode on them.

An update.

We still haven't been able to get the baby to drink from a cup, although he holds it on his own and gets the right part in his mouth. But he just chews it and lets anything drip out.

We took the next step and bought some cups that looked better for him at Sam's. They were about $1.25 each, so no real loss if they don't work. But then my wife went to Target and found the Avent system. They were on sale, so she bought a big box with six cups with all the interchangeable parts. So we just increased our sippy cup population by 50%. But the complexity is much higher now.

Oh how I long for a functioning dishwasher.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
