TOPIC: Learning to bottle feed is not like learning how to ride a bike

Learning to bottle feed is not like learning how to ride a bike
3 Years, 6 Months ago
There are no training wheels for the bottle feeder.

We're hitting two months with Bea and trying to get her to bottle feed at least once per day. Mama's pumping the milk and we're still breastfeeding, but she goes back to work in January (Mama, not Bea) and we want Bea to be on the bottle for our baby help.

I didn't see any DadLab videos or forum posts about this. Did I miss them?

The plastic nipple ain't the mama nipple. Thoughts?

I don't have any truly useful advice. However, I do remember that our daughter was *extremely* finicky about having exactly the right bottle and the right nipple combination. If it wasn't exactly the right configuration, hell broke loose. IIRC, she absolutely insisted on having the Playtex bottles with the Stage 1 nipples (not Stage 2 dammit!!).

So I guess my advice is try a few different types of bottles and nipple combinations, and make sure you pay attention to seemingly benign details such as Stage 1 vs. Stage 2 nipples....

That's one thing we're doing for sure. Thanks, Sean.

We knew that Tyler was going to be in daycare starting around month 3, so the doctor told us to introduce the bottle by the 3rd week to make sure he took to it by the time we were ready to transition him to daycare.
He did very well with the bottle, but then decided to start reject nursing directly from me. So, you never know what's in store when you decide to switch them to the bottle. However, I agree with Sean. We did have to use a few different bottles & nipple stages to get it right.
Just like everything else, try-try again & she will eventually take to the bottle like a champ. Just tell mama not to be upset if she starts liking the bottle more eventually. The bottles flow faster than mommy, so a lot of times they decide that's the way to go.

1 other thing I think we'll do differently next time. We used the Avent wide mouth bottles (not knowing they had BPA in them back then...sigh). The problem was that the bottle is very large & too hard for kids to hold. The bottles that are smaller & angled seem to be easier for the babies to hold onto when they get a little older. You may want to look into those to see if it may make your life just slightly easier. I always had to hold Tyler's bottle when I would see other parent's just handing the bottle to their kids. I was so jealous!

Thank you. I think we made progress tonight with a nipple/bottle combo! We'll see if there's consistency.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
