The Office: The Delivery

Generally, I'm a fan of the Office. I just watched the episode from last week titled "The Delivery" and now I'm irritated. There's nowhere to start well. Let's just say that the whole thing is wrong. They made hospital deliveries seem worse than liver transplants. It's just not true. Visit a L&D area and find out for yourself.

Off the top of my head...

Recovery rooms are not shared.

I'm pretty sure that there aren't male lactation consultants.

There is security in the form of a person to restrict entry to the wing. (although see my month-long diatribe about my MiL to see how effective that can be.)

Hospitals care more about lawsuits for releasing patients too early than getting paid for a few hours more.

And the big one, waiting for hours after water breaks isn't a laughing situation. Bad, bad, bad things can happen.

The episode had it's funny moments, like the tape measure for checking dilation and Dwight making a three day stay out of finding an iPod. But the way they made hospitals look was a disgrace. They may not be for everyone, but they're still the norm. No reason to increase the fear.

Yeah I agree. It was pretty over the top. I guess the plausibility of it all rather than the believability is what makes it funny. I think the part about waiting after the water broke and getting kicked out early was kinda a satirical view on how messed up HMOs can be. To quote one of my not so favorite female politicians. It's OK it's satire.

I think the best part though was when Jim gave the wrong baby to Pam then later put her back and shoved the bassinet closer to the correct mother. All while giving the big oh shoot eyes at the camera. Classic Jim.

We're going to counter by shooting for two full days at Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, OH. We are going to get an in-depth and behind the scenes look at one of the leading Obstetrical and NICU hospitals in the country -- a peek at the leading edge of birthing practice. Really excited about the trip. Episodes to air early May.

And our viewership is pretty similar to The Office, so...

I'm not and Office fan, but I'd love to hear Daddy Brad's opinion. He's all about The Office.

I'm going to have to disagree and say I thought it was an amazing episode.

Now, I can't relate to the whole hospital birth thing, as we did it at home, but they captured the whole first-time parents thing perfectly. From the stress about breaking her while swaddling, to the problems with breast-feeding, and Jim's total lack of knowledge about how breast-feeding works. And being delirious from lack of sleep? I can totally relate. But then when she latched for the very first time with no problem at all, and all those fears and stresses just melted away. That's parenting right there. I thought they captured it perfectly. That was my wife and me 4 short months ago, and it's still very fresh in my mind.

And for the record, I love Dwight Shrute. He is the reason my son's middle name is Rainn.

My take on the episode was that the fear/anxiety about giving birth had to be amped up for the show. A normal delivery situation just wouldn't be that funny. Although one could certainly read in a general bias against hospital birth as well as the insurance industry (and I don't have any problem with that). But the situations in the show were not all that far fetched. The nursing of the wrong infant was quite a news story around here a couple months ago. You can check out the story here. All I can say is some hospitals are better than others. Portsmouth Regional Hospital (the one in the story) is on the bottom of the list for local birthing centers. Needless to say we won't be going there, even though it's literally 2 minutes from our house. We're lucky to have 4 other outstanding hospitals within about 15 minutes from us.

In any case, Liza and I laughed a lot and the episode didn't put any additional anxieties into our minds about our birthing plans or about delivery in general, but was rather a great episode of a great show.

Although The Office looks like a documentary, it's important to remember that it is far from the real thing. How many situations on that show would anyone reasonably find themselves in? I mean, we're talking about a show where people kidnap pizza delivery boys, drive cars into lakes because GPS units tell them to, and (in the same episode we're discussing) destroy a coworkers kitchen to deal with a mold problem. Not exactly real-life situations. My wife and I just had our first baby a few weeks ago, so there were definitely times when she and I looked at eachother and said, "Yeah, that wouldn't happen." But, like most of the things that happen on this show, all of that was just a set-up for hilarious interplay between the new parents (we enjoyed watching the stress level of the first few hours, which was pretty true-to-life in our opinion). Sure, some of it was a bit over the top, but I don't think it was any better or worse than any of the other pregnancy/labor/birth cliches and falsehoods that we always see on TV. And it was pretty damn funny.

I'm not so sure I'll ever think it was all that funny. Maybe if the episode was filmed in 1985. They've built Jim as a reasonably smart character and he obviously didn't read any books or visit DadLabs.com. I realize that they did it for humor, but a setting much closer to normal would have provided plenty of hilarity. Those ankle bands get lost and the staff go flying around trying to figure out which baby left through which exit. Our postpartum room has a window that was where they put the smokers' picnic table. There is still plenty of things that could go "wrong" in a funny way that would seem somewhat plausible in a contemporary setting. Making a decision to reuse decades old jokes for a television show of the new century that likely makes a profit, seems a complete failure of creativity.

Just going to add: when Michael Scott walks into Pam's delivery room and walks right back out and shudders "That kid's going to have alot of hair" I about peed myself. Granted it's not realistic that he could just walk in there, but that line was worth the deviation from reality.

I talk to the TV all the time during that show. It drives my boyfriend/baby daddy crazy. I totally called the baby switch when she was feeding. I kept saying "That baby's too big! That's not your baby!".

Oh and Dwight with the kitchen demolition! One of his best episodes!

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
