TOPIC: Should Dads Drink During Pregnancy?

Should Dads Drink During Pregnancy?
3 Years, 2 Months ago
Everybody knows that pregnant moms should abstain from smoking, drugs and alcohol during pregnancy. But should expecting Dads follow suit? Did your wife or partner expect you to quit in sympathy, or was she cool with your vices? If you didn't quit, did you have to modify your imbibing (aka keeping it out of the house) in any way? Was this question ever an issue for you and your spouse?

Should anybody drink any time after what the University of Oxford put out today? They say consumption of one drink a day increases the risk of certain types of cancer in women (breast, rectal, liver) yet it decreases the risk of other kinds of cancer (thyroid,non-hodgkins lymphoma, renal). Pick your poison. I do think dad's should at least be respectful of there drinking while their sweetie is pregnant. ie don't get blasted every night, it makes you stinky and snore.

t depends, are you married to Jodi? *rimshot* Yowza. Take care of dem boys, Owen.

Yes, be respectful, don't flaunt yer drink in front of her. Be glad you're a man but be discreet.

I had until the 2-month warning... I was floating most of the previous 6 months(this is probably why I felt it was so creepy when the baby was kickin' and movin')... but then I had to be ready and sober at all times, because anything can happen, especially during those last few weeks. I did always ask and ask again to see if she needed anything at all before mellowing out. I did have to keep the fumes to a minimum and take extra care to fumigate. But my wife is AWESOME, and was fairly low maintenance anyway throughout the pregnancy. Again, I have been blessed.

It wasn't really a discussion or question between the woman and I, more of a mutual understanding. When the kid gets here, that particular brand o' fun ceases, mostly because of the legality issues and reprecussions. But you also gotta have all your wits about ya when there's a human growing inside her just about ready to emerge.

Have been 'on the wagon' well over a year now... not braggin' and give me no props... because I'm not thrilled about it, and I am really, really looking forward to Indy going to summer camp...

My wife had never heard of such a rule until her 4th month of pregnancy when one of my buddies came by to pick me up for our annual mens golf weekend.

So, are you sympathetically laying off the booze during the pregnancy? He asked...

I looked at him sternly, How dare you come into my house and put unrealistic expectations into my wife's head while she's pregnant!

We had a laugh, but realistically, during pregnancy, I could be required at any moment to get her to the hospital or attend to other needs. So I made sure it was never more than one beer, and my other vice (cough, cough) was left until I confirmed everything was good in the house and the day is done.

A habit that stayed now that the baby is born. Which is perfect. The priority list has baby and mom on the top. When they're happy and enjoying downtime, so can dad.

I confess that I really like the Proof blog over at NYTimes. Here is a funny essay from a mom and television writer) on how having a baby impacted her career as a lush.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
