Pediatric emergencies and being clueless
9 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Do any of the dads in this forum know of any trusted DVD videos of how to respond to a multitude of emergencies that may arise with their newborn to 3+ years of age? and also which discusses topics on the well-being of your child?

I can't find anything for parents from a trusted source on DVD that shows what to do to potentially save your childs life. It's my biggest fear not being able to know what to do if my daughter is in a life threatening situation that requires immediate action on my part and me not knowing what to do and the potential of her passing away in my arms.

While searching the internet, I have found a lot of baby signing DVDs and it's worrisome that no one has come out with a DVD like this since to me it's more important being able to know techniques on how to save your child's life than being able to tell if they need to poop.

Static resources aren't going to be very helpful. You want to find a Red Cross certified first aid course, probably one for childcare professionals for the best instruction. And get updated annually if possible. It's one thing to see it performed, but doing most techniques wrong can make it much worse with kids.

Ben,

I understand that there are reputable hands on courses for CPR, but I'm more concerned with other emergencies no one has any hands on quick video training for like....

-Chemical & Fire Burns
-What to do during a seizure
-Excessive Bleeding
-Allergic Reactions
-Electric Shock
-Foreign Objects in the Ear or Nose
-Nursemaids Elbow
-Poisoning, Bites and Stings
-Antibiotics
-Crying (Inconsolably)
-Fever
-Meningitis (How to spot it early on before it becomes life threatening)

Id rather be informed and say I tried than do nothing at all and have the regret that I didn't try becasue I was afraid I might make the situation worse.

Thanks for the feedback ben. I'm much appreciated that people are taking the time to respond to the post.

A real First Aid course for childcare professionals would head that direction. But really, what you're talking about seems a bit excessive. Training to be an EMT or work in an ER might get you a third of what you're asking for.

We have a book we kept in the diaper bag for emergency situations that had stuff about poisons, allergic reactions, and a mess of things that were unlikely. Our reason for that was so that grandparents, our chief source of nonprofessional childcare, would have something to reference in case there was a problem. I swear my FiL is illiterate, so it wouldn't have helped anyway.

Here's that book, though. Find it at a library and see if it has some of what you're looking for.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
