Nail Trimming for newborns and toddlers
2 Years, 6 Months ago
Daddy Troy had a great segment on nail trimmers back a while ago. Does anyone have any good advice on how to trim the nails themselves? Newborns get squirmy but you can usually restrain them without danger. My toddler has pipes and it's celebrity death match whenever I need to pare back those Scissorhands.

Video would be helpful.

I confess that I was sometimes called in to be the Bailiff on fingernail trimming operations. Full paternal jacket while mom trimmed the nails. In times of desperation, my wife was not above *biting their nails for them* which I thought was pretty weird.

Have you tried making this part of bathtime? They are relatively docile and the fingernails are softer. Make the trimmer an animal that the kiddo has to feed. Or he'll starve!!!

I think it may be time to bring back CDM.

We found that using the new magnification nail clipper helps. The kid is enamored with the magnifying glass and squirms less cause the cutting looks cool. You can pick one up at any baby store. My wife did the biting thing as well and it kinda freaked me out too.

You know, you guys may have saved my tail. My wife claimed bath time since she doesn't spend as much time with the kid(s) during the day. But I get to trim nails because she's scared. I think she'll take it on now.

But biting? Ewww. How often do they have unrecognizable gunk under them? And he reaches into the gunk sometimes. No way I'm putting that in my mouth and biting.

Um, *raises hand* I have a much easier solution...

do it when they're ASLEEP! TheWife is the nail trimmer (cause Imawusschicken afraid of making TheBoy bleed) and she does it at night usually an hour after he's out, or in the morning when we're getting ready and he's still pretty much out.

At the baby shower we were thrown for our first child, we were gifted something called the Baby Light and Clip. These are nail clippers that have a built in light at the tip. There's a button you press that turns the light on, and the light illuminates the tip of the nail, making it easy for you to see exactly where the nail tip ends, hence making it easier to prevent cutting too far. It has protective edges on it that make it so that the baby's finger can't actually go into between the blades, and it also has a tray that holds nail clippings so that they don't fall everywhere. It's removable so all you do is dump the nail clippings out. There is a video on that site that shows how it works.

My wife loves learning about the newest baby gear, which is how she found the clippers. She registered for the clippers and got them at the shower, and they work so great. We still use them for our son who is now a year old, and on our newborn daughter.

I'm with ConcretinNik..sleeping child was always the easist option. Now she just bites her nails so we dont get the chance, and yes that inlcudes toenails! Learnt that cute trick from her older siblings.

The light-up clipper sounds like a great idea for doing it at night!

I tend to do it in the mornings or evenings, after he's had a bottle and is a little zonked out. Sometimes, if he's just too wiggly, I'll just do as many as I can and then give up and finish later.

I think my wife did the biting thing, too, but never 'fessed up to it!

As our daughter got older and become a toddler, fingernail clipping remained an issue, and she never wasted an opportunity to make a stand against parental control! After a while, my wife started negotiating nail clipping sessions in exchange for nail painting sessions.

Now it seems to be a nice Mommy, Daughter thing that they do. (guess that doesn't really help you though Ben!)

Don't clip, file!! Get out a nail file and sand away! No fears about cutting your babe's finger, and my kids seemed to be much less averse to the sandpaper sensation then to the "snip." Probably you'll have to do this more often than if you clip them, unless you actually take the time to file them all the way down. We have been mostly concerned with making sure that the babes don't scratch themselves or us, so a quick "de-sharpening" of the nail works well for this.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
