TOPIC: How often do you bathe a newborn

How often do you bathe a newborn
1 Year, 5 Months ago
Hello fellow dads -

My firstborn is, as of today, 2 weeks old. So far I've given him a total of three baths, including the "commemorative" first bath the nurses at the hospital show you how to do.

He doesn't smell particularly bad. I clean his face and head with a soft warm washcloth every day, to prevent the 'sour milk' smell. We clean him up really well during diaper changes.

How many times per week do you think I should be bathing a newborn infant? Right now we have our hands full just feeding him, changing his diapers, etc. He's kind of a fussy baby and we feel like we've got our hands full. Is once or twice a week enough, for right now?

Thanks

Roger in Portland

Howdy Roger, I think you are right on track. We gave baths about twice a week with all three of ours. Wipe downs and good diaper changing cleanup get the job done in between. Your nose will let you know when to increase frequency. When the thew gunk starts to collect in the neck rolls time to increase frequency.

That seems about right. You can definitely bathe a baby too much. Every few days is fine. My son would like to still be on that schedule. Unfortunately, he's 12.

Both of our boys came out with a full head of hair. We found that until they got some neck strength, the hardest part of bathing them was washing their hair (water going in the ears, etc.)

As a result, we probably game them baths 2x per week, but tried to make sure we gave them a good cleaning with a washcloth every day.

I am going to buck the trend here... We started bathing Abby daily at around 1 month. She definitely does not need the daily bath, but it is part of a bed time routine that we established. Once she got to around 4 months, it also became play time where she could kick and splash in the water. Some days it is near impossible to take her out of her inflatable duckie tub!

No issues here with water in the ears due to a daily bath, btw...

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
