TOPIC: Diaper Bag Essentials

Diaper Bag Essentials
1 Year, 3 Months ago
As a first time/brand new dad I made a huge mistake the other day.

The whole story is right here.

I went to see my wife at work with our new born so that she could show him off to all of her co-workers. And as one of her friends was hold him he blew his diaper out. As I was going through my diaper bag (she has her own and I have my own) I realized that I forgot wipes. Disaster loomed but we made it work. I won't go through the whole story as it is in my blog link up there.

But I now ask the question besides the essentials what are some of the things to remember or suggestion of things to have in a diaper bag for a 3 month old?

My Dad Gear backpack has a built-in pop out wipes storage compartment. I just have to ensure that its filled with wipes.

HA! Nice. Yea, that sucks, big time.

For the first 6 months, I didn't want to hold theBoy without a spit rag, ever. After the 3rd time holding him without one... and with the 'urpage of regret'... I would actually refuse to hold him until HisMother got me a spit rag. He'd still hit the shirt with a lil' effort. But having the rag for quick clean up made it tolerable. That and the acknowledgment of his age.

I also couldn't leave him in an outfit, onesie, shirt, whatever with even the slightest bit of urp on it. Drove me insane. HisMother would just laugh at me.

His age and size was no reason not to follow one of my life rules: Never be the worst dressed person in the room. (Nor the best, unless you're the bride.)

At that range I made sure we had two changes of clothes for the baby and a a spare Tshirt for me. I think in your case, some of those self soaping wipes would be handy, too. The soap is built in so you can run it under water to have a minibath anywhere you go. And don't forget hand sanitizer. You'd think it's for keeping germs from the baby, but it's really to get rid of that "Fresh Daddy Smell."

Building on what Nik said, I always had an overshirt with me. I bought a grey Dickies button up workshirt that I would put on if I was holding one of our boys to feed or after a meal. The sleeves are big enough, you can put it on over just about anythign and it cleans up easily.

I usually had a small board book and maybe a keychain sized stuffed animal. When the boys got older my "worst case scenario" that I made sure my bag was packed for was a long doctor's office waiting room stay that carried into lunch or snack time. What would I need to keep the boys clean and entertained?

After they turned 1, I stopped at Target and picked up a couple matchbox cars, and left them unopened, and hidden, in a compartment in the bag. That way, if I really needed to pull out the big guns, I had a brand new toy for each of them. This would be guaranteed to bring me at least 5 minutes before they began fighting over toys for me to regroup and formulate a plan/ exit strategy.

Amen to the matchbox cars. They were on sale at the grocery store the other day for $.45. Snagged an armful of them. That's a lot less than we've been seeing the large box of generic cars.

+1 on the Dad Gear pack. Very well thought out.

God idea aobut the spit-up guards. Baby spit on a guys shirt is like a chick magnet; it's toto much of a conversation starter and before you know some gal is gushing over you because of how much you love your child. Uh oh.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
