TOPIC: Date Off In Ultrasound Results

Date Off In Ultrasound Results
1 Year, 3 Months ago
So, went with my pregnant lady to our dating ultrasound a few days ago.

Going in we thought we were at 7 1/2 weeks using LMP. The results were a little disconcerting. The only thing we saw was the gestational sac and the ultrasound measured us at 5.9 weeks pregnant. Going in we were hoping to see our little heart beat. The tech said we are too early to see anything like that and that she had seen this occur on many occasions and not to worry.

Needless to say, I gotta whole lot of worry going on as we expected to see something much different.
We are going in for another ultrasound next week to check if there has been any growth.
My fiancee is feeling great and is still showing lots of symptoms of pregnancy.
There has been no bleeding and no abdominal cramping

Just wondering if anyone out there has gone through a similar experience where the ultrasound dates are off from the LMP dates....or gone through the same thing with the ultrasound results being inconclusive.

Anything would be a great help for the worried pop in progress...

Thanks a million!!!

We had the same thing happen. Going by the LMP dates we thought were were 9 weeks closer to 10 at the time of our first ultrasound (2/17/11). Judging by the ultrasound; however, the MD said that we were a week off and the baby was in fact 8 week and 5 days apparetnly. She assured us that it wasn't anything to worry about. We were able to hear the heart beat but I'm assuming it's because we're a little further along. I wouldn't worry.

Apparently my wife was off a little on the calender regarding the LMP. Personally, if I was the one with that going on monthly I like to think I'd be spot on (pun intended) with knowing when it happened last. That's just me.

I'm no MD but rest easy, you're probably fine.

Awesome. So nice to connect with someone who has gone through the same thing. Our ultrasound was on the same day, funny enough. Thanks for taking the time to post. Much appreciated, and happy pregnancy!!!

I feel like and old geezer saying this, but back in my day (oh, man), they didn't perform the first ultrasound until a bit later (14 weeks). That may be a function of the fact that we worked with midwives, who tend to be a little less tech oriented.

I think the issue with getting an early ultrasound is just the problem that you guys are having -- lots of anxiety as a result of not seeing or hearing what you expect.

It's still really early for you and it sounds to me like you are right where you are supposed to be. Obviously, this can be a nerve wracking process. I hope these ultrasounds aren't compounding your anxiety.

I'm sure someone technical would say otherwise, but I think the early measurements for fetal age are silly. You're talking about microscopic measurements and such a very small age difference. Considering that two of those weeks are fictional (fertilization occurs at 2 weeks? WTH?), being a week +/- seems arbitrary to me. We KNEW without a doubt when each of our boys was started. That the ultrasounds didn't agree was inconsequential.

Now, my 16 year old niece who had her baby three months early (two months after turning 16) is another story. The baby was 7 pounds three months early, without any diabetes in play. Had they done early ultrasounds (I suspect that either Medicaid wouldn't cover them or her father's family consider them Satan's tools) and not taken her word for the LMS or whatever they used to determine the baby's GA, they'd have moved the date up a bit.

Ah, family...

We are working with a Midwife too. My wife was really eager to get the ultrasound to "see" how the little one is doing and get an "exact" date to properly book the integrated screening and what not. Our Midwife is wonderful and although she said it is not something she routinely sends women to this early on in the pregnancy, she was more than happy to send the requisition fo us to have it done. (Gotta love Canada's free health care. Free ultrasounds for everyone!!!).

My wife is convinced everything is more than fine. However, I was the one who called the midwife in a panic and got the run down of all the positive and negative situations it could be. I'm grateful that our midwife is totally keeping us informed and educated, but some of that stuff is pretty scary, and causing me sleepless nights and sinking stomachs. And with so much anxiety its hard not to look at my lady as if she is some kind of science experiment that needs hourly monitoring.

When we are pregnant with our second child (let's get through the first one, Trev), we definitely won't be going in for an ultrasound this early. If it's meant to be, it will be and the stress of not seeing what you thought you'd see outweighs the great it would be to see the little chickpea in action....

48 hours until the next ultrasound....breathe in, breathe out.....

I agree Ben. Every book, pamphlet, website, blog I've read (clocked in lots of reading time this weeK) say to give yourself a 2 week variance on either side of your LMP based due date. I think what really got me into a tizzy was when the ultrasound tech referred to the giant circle as the baby spot/uterus, which made me think it was empty. Upon further studying (lot of hours reading this week) I realized that we, in fact, saw the gestational sac and it looked healthy and thriving with a thick uterine wall!!

We also had a handful of dates thrown at us that week. 7 weeks, five days from the Midwife, over 4 weeks from the ultrasound tech durung the abdominal ultrasound and then 5.9 weeks from the transvaginal ultrasound results given to us my our midwife later on that day. So much information all at once is a lot to take in. I'm not neurotic, but i definitely have had a taste of neurosis this week.

We also KNOW when this baby was made ( It was a busy holiday season with lots of working and family functions and not so much alone time) so regardless if we at 8 weeks based on the LMP, maybe our little one took its sweet time traveling before implantation. Apparently it can take up to 11 day! That might account for the week an a half we are off, right?

Anyways. Good to be here. And thanks for all the support gents!!!

So here is the deal...

Had a wonderful chat with my lady last night and we have decided to not go through with our ultrasound appointment tomorrow.

Last week we went to simply check the dates and not seeing what we thought we were supposed to see has left of wrought with worry and fear. Up until then we had been celebrating every moment of these early weeks of pregnancy and we want to get back to that blissful existence.

There were are guarantees in life and tomorrow we could end up with another appointment of not seeing what we are "supposed" to see and then what? More tests? More appointments?

My wife is pregnant and she has the symptoms/signs to prove it. And, furthermore, I trust her. She is on intuitive lady.

So, back to celebrating the little chick pea, or raspberry, or medium sized green olive that we have today and we'll save the ultrasounds for when they are needed.

peace.

our first ultrasound was at 17 weeks, but the doctors measurements put the prgnancy closer to 21 weeks. The doctor couldn't see everything she wanted to, so she booked my wife back in for one this coming Friday.

This actually worries me a lot. the new due date is for the end of June/early July, and I really don't want to be doing birthday parties on the Canada day long weekend until the end of time.

but, I suppose there are worse thing to worry about.

I'm also going through this same experience unfortunately. According to the LMP we should be about 8 weeks along, but went for our first prenatal visit today and it showed us only at 5 weeks and 5 days. We were so excited and expecting to see a heart beat. Quite deflating news.

However, I'm a pretty positive guy and plan to stay that way until our next scheduled visit in two weeks. I really can relate to tcove's decision to pass on the scheduled visit, though. Does anyone have updates on their current situation? Thanks a lot.
