Couvade: fact or fiction?
3 Years, 11 Months ago
Sympathetic pregnancy is on my mind at the moment (I'm writing a section on this for the DadLabs book -- Quirk Books, Father's Day 2009, btw). Give me a juicy quote and maybe you'll land in the book. Lucky you. Anyway, did you experience any phantom pregnancy symptoms or know anyone who did? Or do you think the whole thing is a crock. Or should it be Croc?

No juicy quote here, but I call bs for males having sympathetic pains... But MAYBE a close girlfriend or sis... maybe. I had no feelings or even indirect problems at all (she had a relatively easy pregnancy... no crazy mood swings or cravings, and morning sickness didn't last long). But the number one greatest thing about pregnancy? It's good to be a man.

But no matter what guys, your kid LIVES(lived) IN HER. That will always win, and demand that you do whatever is asked of you during pregnancy. (However, I do draw the line at being mounted while wearing an empathy belly. Owen obviously has no issue here.)

I don't know if it was Couvade or not, but last September just before we found out for sure, I was doing all sorts of tests because I was gaining weight on a 1700 calorie diet and was feeling horrible. I even went to an endocrinologist to see if they could figure it out. Eventually, my wife went on strike and we lost our healthcare for a couple months, so I had to give up the pursuit of the real problem. All I am left with is Couvade after three thyroid tests, an Echo Stress Test, a lung screening and untold consultations. It was demoralizing since I had just lost nearly 100 pounds getting ready for this pregnancy. Diet and exercise failed and I felt like poo.

I'd have to say if i'm affected by anything, it has to be a full moon. No joke. I just seem to go batsh*t when the full moon comes around, no not a werewolf or anything. But I have been known to play shuffleboard dressed as Hunter S. Thompson from time to time. On the more serious, psychosomatic illnesses have been around for a good long time, who knows? The human body is capable of more than we could ever imagine. We dream, don't know why. We smoke, don't know why. We play golf, well, you get the point...... One of my dearest friends I could've sworn he had it, he would never admit to it though. Backaches, legaches, the whole nine yards. The symptoms were there, but that finger could be pointed in many directions first, couvade probably towards the bottom of the list.

Bri

Sympathetic weight gain makes sense to me. When your wife is pregnant, the diet patterns change. And her getting bigger sort of gives you tacit permission to let yourself go a bit. I think it may even be a good political move. Going on a diet and slimming down while your partner is expecting is going to bring holy hell down on your head.

I got the symPATHETIC weight gain somethin' fierce. It's been 15 1/2 years since our first birth- I'm still trying to loose it. (the weight, not the kid)

Fortunately my wife's pregnancy symptoms have been pretty mild to date and we're down to the last month. I definitely shoved more food into my gullet than usual, finishing her unfinished food. We've shared a few rare bouts of the hormonal grumps, that's for sure. A couple of times we could have moved a burning bus off a box of abandoned kittens.

I have been noticing my stomach moving of late. Wouldn't call it a baby, though. Nope, don't think you really want me to give it a name.

Our midwife calls me an empathetic, nurturing male who's experiencing couvade. I thought she was talking about my skin rash.

Hi Daddy Clay,

My wife is 10 weeks pregnant now. The only sympathetic pregnancy syndroms I can notice is that I have a big belly bigger than the one she has now I need to lose some weight

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
