The Birth Partner: A complete Guide to Childbirth for Dads, Doulas, and other labor companions. by Penny Simkin

I am reading this book and am finding it really helpful. The biggest problem I find is books that tell me "You need to have a birth plan" but don't outline what information a birth plan should include.

This is a really comprehensive book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a lot of detail on what to expect, and what they should be doing as a birth partner.

Good to know. Does the book offer any more info on Penny Simkin? Sounds like somebody we should interview.

As to the birthplan, that might be another thread (or a video). It's basically a gameplan for what is going to happen from the time you enter the hospital until the time you leave.

-natural birth or not
-who is allowed in the delivery room
-immediate post partum plan (baby to nursery or not)
-circumcision or not
-plans for announcing the birth
-might include a checklist for "the bag"

That kind of stuff.

Well when I looked her up I found her website here:

Penny Simkin

(contact info on the bottom)

It's the Third Edition of the book, and my wife said is came highly recommended from some of her mommy sites.

It's pretty insane how much stuff the birth plan outline covers in her book-

Personal Information
Message to Staff
Names of mothers support team
Activity in Labor
Food and Drink
Fetal Monitoring Preferences
Pain Medication Preferences
Positions for Birthing
Pushing Technique preferred
Perineal Care
....

so on and so forth. Seems like it's is preparing you to know what you want, but also having an easy way for the staff to reference what you are looking for with out communicating it over and over.

So far so good. It doesn't leave much room for confusion.

Hi,

I'll throw in my two cents. My wife and I found our birth plan just by looking up a lot of them on Google, and picking the one we liked.

Our labor & delivery nurses did read our birth plan when we checked in at the hospital. All of the incoming shift change nurses read it as well.

Based on our experience, the only strong opinion I have regarding birth plans is that they should be concise enough for a nurse to quickly read as she checks in for her 12 hour shift. Some birth plan templates that we found online were really verbose - they had things like big introductory paragraphs about why the couple had chosen the hospital, etc - and that level of wordiness seemed inappropriate, given the context in which the document is going to be read. You don't know how busy the staff is going to be the night you go into labor, so you want to make it easy for them to get the necessary information out of the document as quickly as possible.

Cheers, and best wishes -

Roger in Portland

I also recommend the book. Although, we never wrote down our birth plan for the hospital staff. We both felt very confident in our abilities to advocate for what we wanted our experience to be. But then again, we also had a doula and the hospital we went to has a very midwife-centric birthing center, which essentially was always one step ahead of us anyway. My wife did hypnobirthing, so that was the only thing that had to be communicated to the nursing staff, otherwise we had a conflict-free, natural birthing experience. Luckily our friend Holly is trying to become a certified doula, and she offered us her services for her first certifiable birth. Although she really didn't have much to do, other than watch. But we were honored to be her first, as her plan is to offer her services to single mothers and mothers whose partners are away on military service, via a local non-profit.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
