TOPIC: Formula - straight up, please

Formula - straight up, please
3 Years, 3 Months ago
I read the formulation problematics thread and wanted to ask my own question. My baby mama recently decided to go ahead and quit with the breast feeding as well. Our girl is 1 month and she has never actually fed from the breast, we've just pumped and mixed with formula. Now we are going to 100% formula and her gas problem has increased dramatically, on Similac Sensitive. We decided to try Enfamil and the look on her face when we gave it to her was completely understandable. Before the switch, she was taking a bit over 4 ounces and feeding every 3 -4 hours. She only took 2 ounces with the enfamil and subsequently went to 2 - 3 hours between feedings. We switched her back to the Similac Advanced because she was drinking 2 oz of enfamil and spitting up 8 oz (!) of enfamil in less than an hour. She is spitting up less now that she is back on Similac, but she is still only taking 2 oz at a feeding. Did anyone else experience this? Thanks for the info.

It sounds a little like our experience with acid reflux. Our Owen was on Enfamil Enfacare. He had some pretty bad throw ups and was slow to eat. It always seemed like more coming out than actually did. I'd really suggest talking to your doc and ask about acid reflux and possibly switching formula yet again. If you've tried the Similac sensitive I'm not sure if the Enfamil Gentaleze will be any better. It's pretty much the same thing but it's more like breast milk. That along with medicine for reflux helped our son until my wifes supply came in. There is one other option that I know of. It's called Nutramagen. I think it only comes in a small can that cost the same as the large cans of Enfamil. Good luck! Hope things get better soon.

I think our son had some acid reflux issues back around 4 weeks. We elevated one end of the mattress in his bassinet which seemed to help him sleep better, spit up less, and be a happier baby. Our first son, now almost 2, seemed to spit up a lot more than our 11 week old. But neither of our sons ever tried the sensitive formulas.

I do remember that a lot of what I've read on feeding issues suggests that you compare feeding tendencies by gestational age. It seems that the digestion system takes a while to gear up for dealing with food. Check with your pediatrician and we'll be pulling for you.
