Vomiting and First Trimester Sickness
2 Years, 12 Months ago
Hello all!

How do you guys comfort your wife while she is spending a bulk of the time in the bathroom vomiting?

I now make sure I go to the bathroom, both types, in a different bathroom than she uses. In addition, I am going to put an extra pillow in the bathroom for her to have a little more comfort...

Any ideas?

Not much more you can do really. You could take a dry erase marker and draw a heart on the bottom of the lid... well, maybe not... that might just remind her of WHY she's puking... and no one wants pregnant rage with vomit breath. Just keep that toilet clean for her and hold her hair, maybe. This will pass eventually (don't say that to her). But the best you can do from now until, well, eternity, is EVERYTHING she asks. (I might be whipped, but that boy o' mine is totally worth it.)

A tough road, for sure. Cold comfort, but we always used to say that the sickness is a sign that everything is working as it should -- all hormones firing. Doing some research -- showing her that you understand (to the extent that you can) what she is going through -- seems to help.

You should also show her this video, in which we force Owen to simulate morning sickness. On second thought, it might make her throw up some more.

Hang in there!

That's a tough time, here's hoping it passes soon. Using another bathroom is great, also be aware of smells no matter how faint, especially in the kitchen and laundry room. Now is not a great time to snack on sardines while lounging in your 4 day old running shorts.

My wife is struggling with the smells at the moment. She cannot handle the smell of raw meat of any kind, so my cooking duties have increased. Sometimes when she makes dinner for me she still has to get me to cook the meat until it begins to smell normal.

@bebop -- my wife was so sensitive to the smell of coffee that I had to banish Mr. Coffee to the garage for 6 months. Made for some chilly coffee runs.

There is something you can do: Get her a prescription for Zofran!

My wife was sick every day - well past the first trimester. Our doctor prescribed Zofran and it has worked wonders. She's due next month and she still wakes up sick if she tries to go without taking one.

They say to take it in the morning, but it's often hard to get anything down in the morning when you wake up puking, so my wife started taking it at night and it's been amazing. (It did take a couple of days to 'kick in.')

Also, buy the generic (ondansetron) and be careful where you buy it. It's worth it to call pharmacies and ask the price before sending in your prescription; Walgreens charged 30 times as much as CVS for the exact same medicine. (That's not a typo, and I know my math.)

Do the dishes and keep the house clean. No strong scents or any triggers. Like I would have to throw out old milk or any old food. Take out the garbage. Seabands also seemed to help for a while.

It will all work out the second trimester is great. Start planning for the baby moon if this is your first baby then its really the last real vacation that you will get to take.

it's funny how timely this topic is for us. during my wife's first pregnancy, she had a little bit of nausea but apparently no queasiness (if that makes sense). if she felt sick in the middle of a meal, she'd throw up, brush her teeth, and keep eating.

this time around she's been hit hard, often just lying curled up in a ball in bed. she's tried pretty much everything, including anti-emetics, and nothing's worked. we're at 13 weeks now and she has good days mixed with bad days. we're hoping it will peter out soon.

on the topic of anti-emetics (like zofran), the downside is that taking it daily can lead to very uncomfortable constipation - like constipation that is worse than the queasiness.

anyway, i realize it's not the point, but the whole process makes me that much more impressed with how tough my wife is. i'm pretty sure i wouldn't be able to get through work and other tasks of daily living in her condition.

My wife went through the exact same thing during her first trimester. She was in the bathroom atleast once an hour. She was also sent home from work alot because she just couldn't handle it.

My best advice is just be there for her. Do things around the house that you normally don't do show her that you still love her and don't ask her to do anything! I made the mistake of telling her its been about 4 months since we had sex and she got pretty upset. Don't do that... I don't recommend it... and I'm sure some of the other dads here will say that same!

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
