We got the diagnosis. My wife's going in to see the nutritionist and get a monitor. We'll see what they say.

What's your experience been like with GD?

I remember my wife fasting then drinking the gunk, but she didn't test positive for GD. Others? My impression is that it is definitely something moms stress about, but that it's something that can be managed.

I think we're mostly in the clear. She was just over the limits on half the tests, so they have her taking her glucose reading four times a day for a week and then figuring it out from there. Not too many diet changes.

That doesn't change her being totally freaked out.

My wife had GD. Managed it fine with diet. Was a lil' frustrating for her on days when she didn't do anything different, and her numbers would be all messed up. But no meds, and she was fine immediately after the birth... well, as 'fine' as one can be having another human pulled from ones body. But as far as blood sugars were concerned she was ok.

I don't eat alot of sweets and such, but I tried not to eat anything she couldn't have in front of her. She said she didn't mind, but didn't need to give her a reason to wig out on me. (Pregnant chicks do that sometimes.)

nicolelord2: there is a certain link between GD and depression. Once a mom-to-be over-sugars, she may show all signs of depression. It depends on the sugar level and how her body copes with that. The signs can include pretty much everything from tiredness to constant crying, you name it. GD usually shows up at the end of the 2nd trimester/ beginning of the 3rd.

Having GD can lead up to serious health conditions for the mom and the baby and needs to be under doctors supervision. Most of the time a change of diet helps. Cut the sweet stuff down, check food for hidden sugars, particularly high fructose! That has to be avoided! Drinking a lot of water i.e. takes care of the excess water in the body.

What can happen to the baby? Well the birth weight can in example be pretty high. I had GD in my last pregnancy and my little monster had a birth weight of 11 1/2 lbs! That was torture to get out! After that he had a pneumo-thorax and was in intensive care for 10 days. We have been really lucky in this case.

There are lots of good websites out there, who can explain both conditions better than I can in a forum. Talk with the doc about it and see what he/she says.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
