TOPIC: Did you nest?

Did you nest?
3 Years, 1 Month ago
hey say that being pregnant causes a nesting instinct in women. Phooey.<br><br>We're expecting our first in late June, and my wife's been rather blasé about it so far. I've asked for her to organize her craft stuff so that it'd be easy for me to move around. She reluctantly spent this past weekend doing so.<br><br>Me, on the other hand, I've made the house a disaster zone while trying to rearrange rooms in preparation for baby. The two-car garage is now a one-car garage because I have all my painting/electrical work gear off the shelves. The guestroom is unusable right now as I've moved all my wife's crafting stuff out of the room that will become the new guestroom to the old guestroom. (The old guestroom will become the nursery).<br><br>My office-which is nearby-has also become a temporary storage area for tools I don't want to run downstairs to the garage to get.<br><br>I've pulled the old wallpaper border off the wall in the old craft room. Today I'm planning on priming the whole room, perhaps painting the baseboards, and taking down the old ceiling fan so that I can hang a new one.<br><br>Have any of you dads out there experienced this type of role reversal where YOU'RE the one building a nest for the newest member of your family?

Still doin' it. (Our boy is 1 year old.) But I attribute mine to ScorpioticNuerosis. My wife's nesting comes in waves of gotta clean this or that-which is always welcome. I like to arrange and organize, but I hate to clean.

I increased my workload with every day household chores for babies 1 and 2 and I am currently doing this while waiting for number 3. However, I have yet to tackle any major projects because I know as we get closer to trimester three, the bat shit crazy honey do's will start rolling in. Trust me, even though your sweetie seems disinterested currently, as the time gets closer, she will have you replace and clean things you didn't even know could be cleaned.

I think I would have nested if my wife hadn't preemptively nested first. Seems like I had the idea, but she would always kick me in the ass to do it before I got to it myself, so it never really counted. I definitely felt the nesting impulse, but was always acting on orders.

My wife had to leave the country so I could get started on the baby's room. Then I left her one little piece, putting up the chair height border, and that took a couple months to get to. Since his birth, I find myself picking up projects for him that I get finished right away while my wife's projects that she started before we were ready are still in the planning phase. I don't think we'll ever see completed, matching, knit viking helmets.

Those are awesome! I think my wife will have to make some. She's Finnish...does that qualify as viking? It's up in that part of the world…

I think I definitely did the nesting around the house. My wife even told me that I was nesting more than her. I have always been one to take care of the house and try and get things ready. I was all over the house trying to get ready and my wife was just hanging out. She thought I was crazy with all the stuff I was trying to do. My wife is a teacher and she actually did her nesting at school. It was the last couple of days before the baby and she got the urge to make sure her classroom was ready before the end of the day and that night we went to the hospital. I know most women would probably prepare if they knew they would give birth soon, but my wife would probably normally just leave it since we had our daughter at the end of the school year and she could come over the summer. I was surprised/impressed when she told me what she had done in her room. So I was the nester at home and she was the nester at her work.

A friend said that his wife nested 8 hours before she went into labor both times. He claimed that it was the best sign to get packed up to go. Of course, SHE won't want to go. She's busy repainting the appliances.

I am in the middle of some serious nesting. I live in an apartment, so I cant do any major modifications, but I come home from work and spend at least 2 or 3 hours moving shit around or cleaning some random appliance. I want everything to be clean and organized and all of our appliances to work perfectly so when the baby comes things are as easy as possible. So I spend an hour cleaning the cooktop and messing with the igniters so that we dont need to use a lighter to light the range anymore, and then I play with the flapper on the toilet because its lazy.<br><br>The entire process is compounded by the fact that our roommate moved out a month ago and left a lot of random stuff and I have only a couple of weeks left before the school semester begins so I want to get as much done as possible. It gives me a great way to burn off that nervous energy that comes whenever I think about the birth, holding my son, etc.

Quagmire is currently hanging crown moulding in the new guestroom. Nursery to follow. Think baby Quagmire will notice?

Nope, but the grandma(s) will! (Or at least they'd BETTER!) Keep up the good work.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
