TOPIC: Infant/toddler mattress

Infant/toddler mattress
Is there a real difference between a mattress for an infant and one for a toddler? In other words, will we have to go out and buy another mattress when our son transfers to a toddler bed? We have a crib that turns into a toddler bed (as most these days seem to), so I'd like to get only one mattress if possible. When looking at mattresses, we've been looking for organic, and we found one that is dual-firmness--firmer side for the infant, a bit softer on the other for a toddler. We could get the single firmness for about $40 cheaper than the dual, but I want to make sure I won't have to go out an get another mattress later on, thus negating the savings. Any practical advice?

I know a lot of people like to buy the cribs that turn into toddler beds (we had one of those cribs).

But when it came time to do the conversion, and I crunched the numbers, a brand new toddler bed - which was PINK like my daughter wanted - was about the same price as the crib <--> toddler bed conversion kit. In fact, toddler beds are incredibly cheap at places like Ikea and Wal-Mart, etc...

And for some kids, certainly my daughter, they want some input in to what their new bed is going to look like.

In any case - even if you don't buy into all of the above - we found that the Ikea toddler bed is NOT size compatible with standard crib mattresses.

We left our kids in the crib to about age 2.5, then moved them to an adult mattress on the floor. Then at about age 5 we would buy a bed or the mattress. So I think we skipped the toddler bed altogether. The adult mattress on the floor may not look beautiful, but it works really well. Easy to get in and out of, no fear of falls.

I'm sure there is some best practice that we flouted with this, but it's how we did it.

Sure, this is a month old, but we did the mattress on the floor thing a couple months ago and it's worked great for our 2 year old.

But the mattress for a crib should be the same size as a toddler bed. So you should be able to do that migration with minimal pain.

But I've heard folks say that if you go from crib to toddler bed and then to the regular bed, you're asking for trouble at each phase. If you're going to have trouble, why not limit it to just the one time?

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
