TOPIC: Music in the delivery room?

Music in the delivery room?
1 Year, 11 Months ago
Not too sure if this is the right place to post this so feel free to move it if need be.

I was wondering if anyone has advice on playing music in the delivery room. Did it seem to help the mothers or did you just end up turning it off? I've been thinking about what I want to play and was thinking maybe some older Coheed and Cambria (the lighter stuff, nothing too heavy) Daft Punk or David Bowie. I'm just not sure if it will get on my nerves or distract me from the pain and help keep the mood light. I'm asking because we recently lost a dear member of our family, Tim's well stocked iPod Touch. So since I would have to burn a bunch of CDs to have all the music I want, I thought I'd see what you guys have to say first.

We burned 2 CDs worth of tunes... and ended up needing 2 songs... Due to an "emergency" C-section (read: sudden, not really an emergency).

She was in a hospital room for a long time, so there was tv(and me) to entertain when not having contractions. When we went in, the anesthesiologist was OUR GUY! He had the best bedside manner of ANYONE during our entire week long stay. He took the CD and played it once the procedure began (a bit too loud for the surgeons at first). She was fairly out of it, so she doesn't really remember hearing the music, but I did for sure. A perfect soundtrack for the event. (BonJovi - yes, that's what I said.)

We wanted it more for the idea of 'the song playing when TheBoy arrived.' So it was more sentimental than calming or distraction.

So yes, take your tunes. You can always turn it off if it starts to bug you, but if you don't take it and then want it, you'll be upset.

Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for the advice! Even though I already have way too much to do before he's here, I will take the time to make a few cds. I think I would be upset in the long run if I didn't. Music means so much to Tim and I and it would be pretty rad to say that my son was born to a Bowie song (I'd have to nick name him "Ziggy" if so)

And I can't say anything about Bon Jovi. I'm the one thinking of taking Coheed and Cambria.

That song makes anything epic. Epic childbirth!

(Although that song is way too heavy. It would probably make me a nervous wreck)

I say bring it with you since you can always turn it off. Music informs our lives, it is our soundtrack. And birth is an amazing moment.

What I think I'm going to do is make a few different CDs with different feels to them. If I need something lighter and soothing, I can put that one on. Or if I feel like I need an energy boost I'll put something faster on. And then of course I'll make one with all the songs that mean a lot to Tim and me.

My wife was doing HypnoBirthing so we needed to have some of the cds around for that. So we loaded them onto our iPhones and brought along a little set of iPhone/iPod speakers. So we could also play music when she wanted. We mostly listened to Nick Drake, Alexei Murdoch, and Jack Johnson. A surprisingly mopey set of tunes for such an occasion, but everyone, including the nurses and midwives, loved it.

I think there is a really interesting movie to be made based on a kid being born to some metal. Awesome.

Although I tend to be more on the Nick Drake side.

A little late in the game for the OP, but I'll throw our experience in anyway. My wife wanted to have some calming music to help her through the later phases of labor. We had four albums of George Winston ready to go. We listened to some while she labored at home, but when we arrived at the birth center, she was ready to begin pushing, so no music then. We turned on the George Winston about an hour after the birth, and had it playing throughout the night.

Now every time we hear it (over the last week since birth) it reminds us of the first few moments with our new daughter. Something very soothing about the way he plays the piano.

Now I'll come back from Mamby-Pamby land...

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
