Newborn Clothing -Stop the Insanity
3 Years, 3 Months ago
Having a newborn in the house again has reminded me how much newborn clothing drove me NUTS with our first child.

How can it be that clothing even by the same manufacturer doesn't have the same fasteners? Some have zippers, some have velcro, some have snaps! The snaps are the absolute worst. How can a single manufacturer in good conscious make newborn clothes that have different snap patterns? Is that some sort of parenting attentiveness test? Do I lose daddy points, if someone comes along and finds out I didn't snap the little one in correctly?

Some of the snaps just run straight up the seams on one side. Some snap up both sides. Some snap up both sides and have different overlapping flaps somewhere along the crotch that you have to synchronize like folding a parachute. It's crazy. Honestly, if your're doing middle of the night diaper changes, how can any sleep deprived parent be expected to cope with that?

My wife has taken pity. Our newborn now spends the night time hours in sleep gowns. Merciful simplicity.

Am I the only one vexed by this? Just curious.

You are not alone... but I'm ridiculously nuerotic about matching up those damn snaps properly and making sure every single one is snapped. Seriously. Really drives me batty if he is wearing one with loose snaps that constantly come undone. Grrrr... (If I remember it when I do laundry, it won't make it back to the dresser.)

I actually like the pants with snaps on the inseams as these make changes MUCH easier. And babies in pants is just too cute.

What also irritates me is the size differences. The boy is still wearing somethings that are 6-9 month size, and doesn't fit anymore into some that are listed as 12 mo. Are there no standards?

Have to agree that pants with snaps on the inseams are the ultimate in terms of changing convenience. The cuteness factor is pretty cool too.

The sizing thing can definitely drive me wild, but as far as I can tell, that never improves. My older child is 5 and the sizes on the clothes that actually fit him swing wildly.

If there's anyone out there in the clothing manufacturing industry that can shed some light on this, I'd love to hear.

I just keep an eye out for embroidered baby cloths (pictures of animals, cars or whatever). They look like higher quality than silk screened patterns. If you look on the back side of embroidery, you'll see this white fabric patch they glue on there. The reason is because the threads they use also contain stiff polymer threading for structure or whatever and so the ends of it sticks out in a most prickly fashion all over the backside of the image. The patch keeps the ends down and from coming into contact with your kid's skin.

Rub the backside of your hand around the patch and you'll feel it catch and scratch you. Not really a big deal. Now a few times through the washing machine with detergent and hot water and sometimes those glued patches fall off exposing your kid's skin to the full abbrasion of the threading. My kid kept getting skin rashes till I figured it out. At first I thought he might be alergic to the degerent or something. I felt so guilty because it must felt like wearing a cactus t-shirt and my kid never complained. Now I don't buy anything embroidered that has the white patch glued to the back of it.

Great advice! I've never had an issue with a specific outfit, but definitely something to watch for.

i have no idea how I am going to clothe my kid I mean not only are there all those closures but the sizes are entirely random by maker? I mean isn't there a law to standardize that?

It's not too bad! Definitely not trying to intimidate anyone. As for standardization, do you think we could get Congress to convene a committee? Gotta start somewhere right?

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
