Let's talk Tandem Strollers
2 Years, 4 Months ago
At the birth of our second child in December or January, Duncan will be 22 months. Too young to think the Sit & Stand seat option would be good for him and too big for a side-by-side double. We saw a Kolcraft tandem at B-R-Us last night that looked promising. We need to do this on the cheap but in a safe way. It needs to be able to handle a Graco car seat for a few months.

Any suggestions? Anyone see a Kolcraft in use?

Of particular value are wheels that can handle off-roading since we spend summers in farms and gardens.

What's the budget here? Give me a number and I'll do some research and make some calls. Would you be willing to test and review one for us?

Without consulting Mommy Moneybags, I'd have to say that we're looking somewhere around $250 or maybe up to $300, depending on features. And, I'd love to review one or a few for you. We could even set up a course, I'm sure. My wife has access to a durability course that they've used to test MRAPs.

The preliminary research I've done so far seems to show some of the common Tandems as being good with all of the same failures. They tend to be heavier than a single stroller (Well, duh.) and less maneuverable to some but the maneuverability has all be second-hand. The reviewers didn't have trouble themselves. So the ratings have been consistent but not very telling. More to follow.

We just got a Bumbleride Indie Twin for our kids and it's really nice. It's a side-by-side, but it isn't as wide as most side-by-side strollers. It also has lots of attachments, like there's a carriage cot that you can get for it and an infant seat adapter. It has an adjustable handle which is great because I'm quite taller than my wife. The seats can be adjusted in lots of different positions and so can the footrests. It is priced well above the range you're looking in, though.

My parents came to town yesterday and decided that instead of buying our son a tricycle which he won't be able to ride for a while, they bought us the Kolcraft. We took it for a few spins around the block in the store. It was much more maneuverable than the Graco.

I just can't see spending more than $250 on one of these things. Anyone have thoughts on why so many strollers cost more than a motor scooter? Shoot, they're selling what is essentially a double umbrella stroller for $169. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Got it assembled today. One thing I don't care for is that to properly fold it, you need to disassemble parts of it. I guess that's just part of it being as flexible as it is. It"s a monster, though. I'm sure that my wife won't be able to use this anytime soon. And it's a good thing we've got some sizable cargo space. We may need to take a trailer with us if we go somewhere overnight, though.

Need to keep an eye out for a Sit & Stand model at the consignment stores. I think we'll get one in a year or two.

I haven't said more about this stroller. We've taken the toddler out for a few spins with it. It's pretty nice and it is rather large. This week, I anticipate our first outing with two kids in tow. The adapter for a Graco carrier will be a huge help. The baby can be at the back, under a careful eye while his brother can face forward or back. We'll need to figure out what's going to work best as well as how to best store it in a vehicle. I think my Trailblazer will quickly become our default touring vehicle since we can put the stroller in the back with other things as well. The equinox isn't really Tandem Stroller Compatible. They really should make this a feature on the auto spec cheat sheet.

More soon, I hope.

I too am looking for a double as my daughter will be 23 months when our second is born. I really was banking on the Kolcraft, but don't want to have to assemble it each time we use it. The baby trend double looks pretty good too,www.allreviews.com/baby-strollers/2010/0...e-to-fit-your-needs/ opinions?

The "assembly" really isn't a problem. The big payoff is that it folds up very small in comparison to the others we found. The seats just slide on quickly and if you have the room, you can leave them on and just deal with it only folding as much as the Gracos or BabyTrends. The baby carrier attachment doesn't ever have to come off to fold down flat, so right now, we just stretch it our and slide the front seat on for our toddler and we're done. Maybe 20 seconds if my back's hurting.

We had our boys in the Michigan Ikea store on Sunday. A woman pursues us and begins asking us about the stroller. She was in awe. True stroller jealousy. I felt so good. She said she might have her husband track us down to take a look. I pulled the smooth move and offered to let her drive the boys around for a bit and possibly put them through college. Ok, I left off the last part.
