Doppler Heartbeat Monitor
3 Years, 2 Months ago
I thought one great gift I could give my wife (and me, lol) for Christmas is a doppler heartbeat monitor. I've seen several on Ebay and others on the internet at various places.... but I have NO idea what's a quality monitor and what's not. The one used at the doctor's office was one that didn't require headphones. I was able to hear the heartbeat and I was sitting across the room. I'd kind of like one like that, but without breaking the bank. Anyone have a suggestion on a monitor that I could get that's really good quality? Please let me know ASAP. Thanks!

Honestly, I wouldn't recommend them. I know you can rent them from the hospital if you're really wanting to have one at home, but to purchase one? eh... I wouldn't.<br><br>I think the main reason I wouldn't is because what if you can't find the heartbeat? What if the baby is positioned in such a way that it's difficult to find? Then you and your wife will suddenly be worried that something terrible has happened! I know if I had one in my house while I was pregnant I'd be trying to listen to those heartbeats all day and get overly worked up over any minor changes. Plus it's something you'll only use for a few fleeting months, and then you'll have no use for it anymore.<br><br>Yeah, I'd totally never want one of those things in my house. I'd be come a total worry wart.

Well, I was disappointed in the lack of responses for my question, so.... I went ahead and bought the monitor. Amy, thank you for your reply. I can definitely see the problem in having the monitor (i.e. possibly causing undo worrying, etc) but we've been to 2 prenatal visits already and have heard the heartbeat both times. I figured the monitor will give us a way to be tuned in to the baby at home, and we can even begin to hear movement and kicking later on. I think overall it will be a neat experience, and allow us to bond with the baby. Plus, I know the grandfolks are just going to love us bringing the monitor over. Now the issue will be.... honey, pull down your drawers! LOL. I think it will be a good experience <br><br>www.healthchecksystems.com/babybeat.htm

Take the monitor with you to the next appointment. Get the doc to show you how to find the heartbeat easier so you can hopefully prevent the panic. But be prepared, he/she is likely to tell you the same thing as Amy.<br><br>I went the really cheap route and bought a generic stethiscope... the doc just laughed... not gonna work... at all. MAYBE the last week... I was bummed. (it stayed in a drawer the whole time) but now he'll have a cool toy later.

I bought a used Doppler pretty inexpensively on Craigslist, but my wife was at first more scared of not finding the heartbeat and refused to try it. We'd had three previous miscarriages, so the possibility of a fourth was an ever present fear during the first trimester. We took the unit it to one of the OB appointments late in the first trimester and had the doctor try it out. After he stopped laughing at how old it was, he showed us how to use it properly and we employ it from time to time just to hear the wush-wush sound of his heart beat. They are easy to operate and it's taken my wife a maximum of 20 seconds to find the HB even early in the second trimester. It particularly came in handy to calm fears one day when he wasn't seeming to kick as much as in previous days, and a quick use of the doppler assured us that his heartbeat was strong and steady. That one use alone was worth the cost. I think it is a neat device, certainly not necessary but I'm glad we picked one up.

I am happy to report that we have used the doppler several times since Christmas. It was even a gift that keeps on giving because we got to let the grandfolks hear the heartbeat during our Christmas visits!!!!!!!!<br><br>Tonight, we got it out again to share a mommy-daddy moment alone in our home. It has never taken us very long to find it each time. Although now that we are further along, we figure the baby is able to move around more and it does take us a few more seconds to get a good reading. But, it never fails and we are always able to hear the HB, even if it's not for very long.<br><br>Oh, found one more use for it tonight. Put the doppler on the dog and heard the doggie thud, thud, thud.... then experimented by saying Barker, you wanna treat? (treat is a magic word) and we got to experience a RAPID HB!! So worth the money!!!!!! We love it!!!!!!!

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
