TOPIC: Consignment sales - what to buy, what to skip?

Consignment sales - what to buy, what to skip?
1 Year, 12 Months ago
Near where I live, they have a huge consignment sale ("exchange") where you can work a few hours, then shop during pre-public sale hours.

My question is what products would you recommend buying from a consignment sale and which ones to avoid?

Thanks!

Those are pretty cool. Whether or not it's worth working the sale for the 'pre public' shopping, I don't know.

I was the lone Dad that signed up to go to a couple of those. It was funny, and a bit surprising, when they pointed that out when we walked up. I was also one of only 4 dudes there shopping (with their significant others).

I found that they are pretty good about having only quality stuff. A bit better than the average yard sale (though you can get lucky with those too), but it's also a bit more expensive, but definitely better than retail. (Craigslist is a good resource for various items as well.)

It's my understanding you should avoid used car seats, because you have no idea if they've been in an accident. Most people wouldn't sell one that has, but ya never know. The sales I attended would not allow car seats to be sold at all.

We bought some toys, and a few clothes. A few of the toys still needed to be cleaned, but nothing major. (Just like any yard sale purchase.) I got a great diaper bag backpack, which we are still using, for $3.

So just do a bit of research if there is something specific you are looking for in regards to bigger ticket items (strollers, cribs, furniture) so you immediately recognize a good bargain vs. a so-so deal. It's basically a higher end yard sale. TheBoy hadn't yet arrived, so we had alot of fun imagining and day dreaming...

Sorry I don't have a better answer to your actual question.
Avoid car seats, and look for diaper bags. (Check them inside and out for rips & tears, mine needed a minor repair.)

It all depends on the sale. My main function is mechanical inspector and general Sherpa. There is a lot, but like any good 2nd hand event, you gotta separate the wheat from the chaff.

Bring some batteries and small screwdriver (for opening some battery compartments) to test electronics, be up to date on what things cost and you should be GTG.
