Baby Wearing
2 Years, 10 Months ago
In light of today's video about Dads wearing babies - did you? Do you?<br><br>We used our Bjorn from day 3 until she got too big, but we also used a sling until she got too fussy for it. Since then we've used an Ergo Baby and love it. Our daughter got to see all of the sights in DC in that thing last summer, and we have found it the best tool for us in airports. Once we get through security we toss her in and have greater ability to get around.<br><br>When I'm out with my daughter and wife I usually pull carrying duty, by my choice. I blamed my wife's boobs, to be completely honest, but it's always been much more about being close to my daughter. Oh, and the extra attention brought on when the great dad carries his child around a mall!<br><br>What about you? Any awesome carriers you've used?

I absolutely LOVE to carry the boy around. (The approving smiles from 'others' we'll say, is a definite bonus.) We have a Jeep brand carrier (sorry sponsors), and it worked well, but we haven't used it much. Maybe 10 times total. Just when I was trying to be Mr. Mom and get some chores done while he crashed out. I'd bet he's too big for it now, and too fidgety... Haven't tried it recently though. Perhaps soon we'll see if he'll chill enough to use it.<br><br>I am definitely of the Chivalry mindset DC mentions. The wife carries him often and really takes care of putting him to sleep each night, attending to him if he wakes up, as well as getting him fed and ready to roll in the morning. So I try to help as much as possible and carryin' the heavy bugger seems to me like the most helpful thing I can do. I do worry that some might think I'm tryin' to steal the public spotlight with the boy, but I'm not (though I do dig the smiles, no doubt). I try to make a point whenever it's discussed to really play up her role at home.<br><br>I don't think there is any guy out there that thinks time with his kid is girly or not manly. Let me rephrase that... there isn't any DAD out there that thinks a guy spending time with his kid is girly or not manly. Dad's get it. Totally.<br><br>I did laugh a bit last night at the grocery store in the baby aisle when this guy stopped and said Aww. Honey look. And showed his wife the bib that said Daddy's lil' girl. His wife kinda blew it off, yea uh huh. He saw me smirking and I quickly said Totally understood man.

I'm lookin at one of these swiss-army knife style carriers (backpack style) now that Audrey is old enough to hold her head up and enjoy the outdoors, even if the outdoors isn't yet all that enjoyable. To the tune of about 400 bucks, it's taking a back seat to more pressing things right now, such as a house...lol

My oldest was a preemie, and was too tiny when he came home for anything but a sling. I found the sling a little hard to get arranged right, and frankly, wasn't crazy about the look on me. My wife raved about it. We didn't have a Bjorn, so I was at a disadvantage in the early going when it came to baby wearing. We had a sub-par front baby carrier that turned me off. We did eventually find a good backpack, and I finally got my share of baby carrying. If I had it to do over again, I would slightly upgrade the carriers and strollers right out of the box, with the oldest. We went kind of cheapo, and things wore out and had to be replaced for the third kid, then those things were underused by the time they were outgrown.

We were given a cheap Snugli carrier as a shower gift that I used once and then returned. My wife has since become very interested in the wraps and slings. We have 2 slings and 3 wraps. One of the wraps is a Moby D and the other two are BabyHawk. Our son who is almost 7 months old loves being in a back carry in the Baby Hawk now so he can look around. Our Baby Hawk has camo skull and crossbones and the other one is green so I don't mind wearing them. The Moby D allows you to carry them on the front facing out which he likes as well. The slings are nice because you can have them in the diaper bag and just pull them out whenever you need it.<br><br>I agree with Rob that when we are together I carry him a lot more. When I'm home I do tend to want to hold and take care of him too take some of the load off my wife.

We had the fortune of being given one Bjorn and then inherited an unused one from my wife's sister. I can only remember one time using it when I was working in the community garden. My wife's nail tech saw us as she drove to work so when my wife got home, she asked me how it worked out. I think Duncan may have grown out of them before most kids would have. He's been beyond the height and weight limits for a few months.<br><br>No matter the brand, I think it's very helpful to have one for each parent. The amount of adjustments that need to be done to change off is inconvenient enough to discourage one of the parents (if not both) from using it.

I used a Bjorn for about a year and found it invaluable, especially when doing the weekly grocery shopping. She was initially inward facing until she could hold her head steady and she seemed to enjoy the cosiness of the arrangement, falling asleep frequently whilst I reached up and down for produce. I have to admit that it was enjoyable getting admiring looks from people and I was even approached by an impressed lady who said she had one but could never figure out how to put it on. I used it until she reached the upper height/weight recommendations and by that stage she wanted out anyhow, as it was time to walk and interact with her surroundings. I would say it was one of the best buys I made for our daughter to date; first lego set is coming a close second right now. It also washes well.

We use a baby carrier every so often. We don't as much as we used to because now our daughter is getting a little more fussy about being in one. She really only like to be in it when we are moving. If I am doing stuff around the house I will sometimes wear to keep her occupied at the same time. However if I want to sit for a minute she is immediately crying. Lately we just haven't been using it as much.<br><br>The funny thing is that the carrier actually goes up over her mouth so she spend the whole time licking it. Anytime anything is in front of her mouth she licks it. We were out at a pumpkin patch and got a pretty good picture of her licking it. Kind of looks like she is ready to throw up.

We tried baby wearing, sling style, when our daughter was an infant, but she has hip dysplasia and her orthopedic surgeon said we couldn't anymore. We were able to use the snugli carrier though, as it held her hips in the right position for her case. This time, as we are expecting again, we plan to try a wrap style, like the Moby. The colors are great too, www.allreviews.com/baby-carriers/2009/11...ces-seasonal-shades/ in my opinion.

My son was only about 4.5 lbs at birth so we couldn't use the Bjorn. We were handed down a sling that just didn't work either. He was so small, it looked like he was being smothered. As soon as he hit the minimum weight of 8lbs for the Bjorn we got it and he loves it. So far I've only used it around the house but I think it's pretty great. I've been able to get some chores done around the house and he just hangs out with me. Most of the time it puts him straight to sleep. I've also been able to get a little video game/Guitar Hero time with him in it!

With our twins, it was not uncommon for me to vacuum with one in a sling and one in a Baby Bjorn. It was great. The vacuum and motion put them to sleep, and my happy I was able to get some chores done!

Noe it looks like the Consumer Product Safety Commission is going to issue a warning about baby slings. Sound like there have been some suffocations. We used one of these when we brought home Bubba because he was only 4 pounds and not big enough for any other kind of carrier, but I had that concern then -- he could almost disappear down in that thing.

So I guess they are going to print warning labels?

I guess i should disclose that BabyBjorn is a sponsor of this site, so I am obviously biased.

Our toddler was trying to put on a bright yellow Bjorn the other day. It made him look like a crossing guard.

And...

If anyone sees a 2 year old walking around town with a yellow Bjorn and his 3 month old brother safely mounted to his chest, do let me know. I just know they're planning their escape!

And..

The toddler approves of the Bjorn.

hahaha

@Ben, your last comment immediately made me think of Pinky and the Brain.

"Before each night is done
Their plan will be unfurled
By the dawning of the sun
They'll take over the world.

They're Pinky and The Brain
Yes, Pinky and The Brain
Their twilight campaign
Is easy to explain.
To prove their mousey worth "

I regularly refer to my two as Pinky and the Brain, my wife has no idea what I am talking about.

Re:Baby Wearing

The slings that are a suffocation risk are the ones that look like your baby is being carried in a duffle bag (infantino, munchkin cargo sling, eddie bauer sling, etc.) There isn't a safe way to use them--even used correctly, they bend baby so that their airway can kink. The elastic in the sides pull the sling closed so that you can't see baby and they end up rebreathing stale air. Not all slings are created equally, I wish the CPSC hadn't lumped all slings into their warning.

And sorry sponsors, but we love the Ergo and Beco a heck of a lot more than we did the Bjorn. You can use them on front or back and they're comfortable up to 40 pounds. Plus, there are less buckles and snaps to deal with so they're easier to put on.

We just bought a Moby Wrap carrier online last night and I'm dying for the thing to get here. For the past week at least once a day Jack will throw a fit until someone picks him up and holds him until he falls asleep, however long that will take. I'm typing this one handed because I'm going through one of those fits right now. And since he slept most of the day who knows when he'll actually fall asleep. I just pray this sling does the trick.

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
