We got lucky and found a Graco two channel unit for under ten dollars. I can't find the base unit, or I'd be able to give you the model number. This came with two receivers that run on batteries and have AC adapters. We got them thinking that we could beat them up when we go camping or leave them at the in-law's and not worry since we'd need a nicer model for home. But then these were everything we were looking for. We didn't ever experience interference or overextend the distance they would reach. We just stopped using them last week.

We were given this as a shower gift. Safety First Crystal Clear it's 49 Mhz, analog, 2 channel and it is really as basic as it gets, my parents probably had the same one 20 years ago when my younger sister was born.

We were concerned that it would not work in our neighbourhood as we are near the airport and it is a new area with a lot of young families. But it is great, from across the room it can hear the motor of the crib mobile.

I was looking at some very expensive models with video, 60 channels, DECT 6.0 GHz etc. but with prices between 200-300 it's hard to justify.

I would recommend buying the cheap one from Walmart take it home and try it. Leave it on for a few days on each channel and just listen. If you don't hear anyone then it works and keep it.

One warning though is that with my sons door closed and the laundry room down the hall closed I can still hear the dryer. I would recommend maybe turning off the transmitter if you are trying for the next kid. A guy with a scanner listening to the baby crying is one thing, but then again maybe the thought of someone listening may spice things up.

We have the Fisher Price Sounds and Lights monitor. It is 49mHz frequency with 2 channels. We haven't had any problems with it. It has been working great. I was actually looking at it on Target to find out the information and they had really bad reviews for this product.

We like that it actually has two receivers for us to listen to her, which work both with being plugged in and with batteries. We also like the the fact that it actually uses lights to show noise so we know if we need a break we can put her in her crib, turn the volume on low and see if she is still crying, or if she settled down and went to sleep.

Even with 2 channels we really haven't had any interference. One time we think it picked up a truck driver's radio since we have lots of truck drivers by our house. It cut in and we thought we heard someone talking, but then it cut right back out. Since then we haven't heard anything.

One of the problems (I don't know if this is with other ones) is when we shut off the main receiver by the baby the other ones that are on start shooting out static. Makes it kind of hard to go take care of the baby in the middle night and trying to make it quiet for the other person that is trying to sleep. They either hear everything that is going on in the room, or they would have to heard loud static if I shut it off. Other than that we are really happy about this monitor.

We have a FisherPrice 900 mhz 10 channel monitor. Never had any interference, but the same static prob that SophiasDad points out when you turn off the main unit. We haven't used it alot, but we do have a small house and it has been great. We've only used it when he was sleeping and we wanted to run down stairs and do dishes, or laundry. It has the lights too. We didn't go for the cheapest model, but we saw no reason to get the most expensive either. It tells us when he's awake or waking, giving us time to get to the room to put him back to sleep, or scoop him up if he's had a good nap...

And props to DaddyTroy for venturing once again into the forums.

We're using the Philips Avent DECT monitor (www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_languag...). We've been happy with the sound quality and range. The nursery is on the third floor of our town house, and the monitor maintains a connection while I am outside doing yard work.

Originally, I thought that battery (replaceable) died too quickly, but after reading the manual, I set the sensitivity to 3 bars and now the monitor lasts 5+ hours.

We didnt use a baby monitor. Maybe because of attachment issues on our part, but the baby has always slept in our room, either in her own cot/bed or in with us. Not trying to save money, thats just the way things developed/happened.

I want to know when I can GET RID OF the damn baby monitor!! Been listening to the damn thing for 2 years. It's been on my side of the bed for 10 months now, and on my wife's side of the bed for 12 months. I want to unplug the thing and throw it out the window, but my wife always recoils in horror when I make that suggestion!

Anybody else have to negotiate with their spouse re. whose head will be closer to the baby monitor all night long??

Also...if there are any baby monitor manufacturer's out there....I would LOVE to have a baby monitor with a snooze button. Would that not be awesome?!?!?

We took it to the MiL's and when it came home, it just never got plugged back in. I'd recommend turning it down a little each night until it's just off. If she never notices, you'll have something to stand on. At two years, you could probably replace them with FRS two-ways!

We can hear when one starts to be mean to another and need to intervene. We also use it on nights when our kids are vomiting to know when its time to get up and wash the sheets and make sure no one has pulled a Hendrix. Finally, it allows us to walk to the convenience store on the corner and grab a six pack when the kids are asleep. Just kidding on the last one.

We use the Panasonic BL-C131A wireless network camera and the home wireless network. I can access it on my BlackBerry (3 sec stills) when I'm away from home, full motion video and sound in the house and the grandparents can access it remotely for sound and video too!

Remote pan and tilt and click to center... even can zoom too. After I set it up, just need to move it and plug in the power it's good to go!

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
