TOPIC: Over Scheduled

Over Scheduled
2 Years, 6 Months ago
My 6 year old son just finished the Fall soccer season on Saturday and basketball season starts on Monday. With games every weekend and practice once a week, in my opinion it's too much! I'm thinking we will skip the b-ball in winter and wait till Spring for baseball. What are thoughts on over scheduled grad schoolers? Do they need a seasonal break?

I think the over scheduling can be stressful for us and the kids, but I keep going by convincing myself that in the sedentary age in which we live, any possibilities of exercise for our kids are an absolute must. As has been mentioned in several other postings/blogs about when we were kids/'free range kids'/stranger danger, imho, our children invariably do not get out to run about as much as when we were kids, so some sort of outlet outside the home, albeit in a controlled environment, is a must for the sanity and wellbeing of both parents and kids.

Thats just my take on it and what I tell myself when I am whizzing around like a manic taxi driver from A to B and then C without much breathing space.

I feel your pain. With three kids in soccer, with game radius now extended to 100 miles, it can really feel crazy. For us, basketball is a relief! All the games happen at schools in our neighborhood, so drive times come way down. And our b-ball league doesn't start until 1st grade, so we only have 2 participants. It seems so easy by comparison!

In terms of over scheduling, I think you have to encourage kids to participate in something extra-curricular, but it's important to limit that so your family can accommodate (e.g. only one participation per season). When we really get into the weeds is when kid has more than one commitment at a time (Destination Imagination in addition to sports, two sports seasons that overlap).

B, you are just starting to make the transition to the next stage of parenting. I see lots of minivan miles in your future.

Holy cow... I'm overwhelmed enough hauling our son with me to a mom's group two evenings a month.

On the other hand, every weekend it seems like someone wants us to come and visit - in-laws, my parents, friends, etc. Ferrying a baby (and two dogs, if we're staying overnight) around 3 weekends a month SUCKS. I'm trying to encourage us to stay home and be party poopers sometimes so we can get a break.

Our son elected not to play soccer this Fall, and when we found out the basketball schedule (practices at 7:15 on weeknights for 5 and 6 yr olds), plus weekend games, we decided to pass.

It can definitely get crazy quickly and we only have one child old enough for after school activities. It'll really get nuts when our second child gets older.

I agree with folks here, one activity (be it sports, music, art, dance whatever) per child per season in early elementary is enough. Maybe in upper elementary, they can start taking on more than one.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
