Watch D.O.G.S -- anyone familiar with it?
1 Year, 2 Months ago
Hey Gang,

Just curious, does anyone out there participate in or have first hand knowledge of the Fathers.com Watch DOGS initiative? fathers.com/content/index.php?option=com...w&id=21&Item

Straight from their website "WATCH D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is the father involvement initiative of the National Center for Fathering that organizes fathers and father figures in order to provide positive male role models for the students and to enhance school security."

I'm considering calling for the informational training conference call, but was curious to know if anyone else had first hand knowledge. It sounds like a great initiative to increase the presences of male role models in schools.

Would love to hear if anyone has experience with the program. Thanks

I believe there was a video or discussion about it quite some time ago at the Labs... It may have been a live show or at one of their conferences (the PTA thing?)... Daddy Clay or Daddy Brad might remember...

I'm very interested as well, but am still a few years away from school... It seems like a great thing to me.

I do try to be involved at my son's "daycare." It's a bit more than a daycare in that it is directly associated with the university and the education department here, so it's not like I'm volunteering at a business. The other Dad's I've met are very cool and seem like great and involved parents, but at the various volunteer meetings, I'm always the only dude.

Hey Nik,

Thanks for the note. I'll have to dig deeper into DadLabs here to see if I can locate their post/video.

I'm lucky. I work from home, so I can flex my schedule a bit. When my son was in kindergarten, I volunteered once a week to help the teacher gather and distribute weekly reading assignments. Essentially, I was a class librarian.

This year, there don't seem to be as many regularly occurring volunteer opportunities, but I try hard to find periodic chances to get in the class room whenever the teacher makes a public request for help. A little in class tutoring or whatever.

I just love seeing the boy in that element, and I do think it's important for him and other students to see parents as a group, but particularly dads when possible in their schools.

We meet the WATCH D.O.G.S folks at last years National PTA convention.

It is a good organization that assists dads in being more involved in their kids schools. Anything that fosters engagement of men in the school system gets my vote. An interesting outcome of the program: a majority of kids benefitted when dads were actively involved in the school not just those who's fathers volunteered.

Dadchelor Parties

Daddy Clay talks to Beth Feldman, Founder and President of RoleMommy.com about a few "dad trends." Dads are becoming more involved with everything from the very beginning, including doctors appointments and even baby showers. A Dadchelor party is a get together for new Dads that is essentially, diapers for beer. Guest bring diapers and beer is served while you watch movies or maybe the game. At a Dadchelor party, baby kegger, ok, strippers, not ok. (Trust us on this one.) Another great idea for new Dads is to take the Mom-to-be on a "Babymoon" where she gets pampered and can relax. Well, relax as much as one can when building a human. Episode 868
