TOPIC: Back to School Shopping

Back to School Shopping
1 Year, 6 Months ago
I was at the local jumbo box retailer looking for a replacement fan for the one in the Creative Room that Dixie stole, and I noticed that the back-to-school aisle was jammed with shoppers. And dads were making a pretty good showing.

Which leads me to wonder: Do you participate in the back-to-school shopping in your family? Do you budget or bargain hunt? What are your tips for finding quality, value and good prices? Do you think you will spend more or less than last year? What are your thoughts on back-to-school shopping?

And, are you counting down to the start of school?

For further reading and listening, there was a piece on the economy and back-to-school shopping on NPR this morning.

We took advantage of the NC state tax free weekend last weekend to outfit the boy (and his classroom) for the upcoming year. We didn't do a whole lot of store to store bargain hunting, but in-store definitely opted for the discounted items.

I was definitely heavily involved. The boy loves shopping for gear/supplies, but despises the school clothes shopping process. It's up to me to be the family motivator/cheerleader/arbitrator.

As for counting down, our rising first grader can't wait. He's made a paper chain calendar counting down the days 'til he gets back in the classroom.

I participate in the back to school shopping but there is not a great deal around our home. Walker's things are choosen by the school so not a lot of bargain hunting for him and Ella's school provides most supplies and charges a supply fee. This year it's mostly on line.

Thought I would ping this topic -- since it's that time again -- at least down here in Texas. Public schools start next week. Woooooot!!

My wife didn't pick up the standard school supplies packet by accident, so I may get to take the kids shopping for school supplies (which I love). Keeping my fingers crossed that the school doesn't have any extras on "back-to-school" nigh on Friday so I can take the kids to Office Depot over the weekend.

We did ours a week ago to take advantage of the sales during NC's tax free weekend.

The actual classroom supply shopping was fairly standard stuff. The school requests that you buy generic because it's all going into a classroom supply closet, and then is redistributed out on an as needed basis.

We had fun picking out new backpacks, lunch boxes and thermoses, where the boy could "express himself."

Lots of fun.

For some reason, our school has decided to provide the required school supply list to the students on the first day of school (tomorrow), and allow everyone to go shopping that night. Being that ours is one of the few elementary schools in the area, and that there are only a couple places (target, walmart, staples) in the area to buy supplies, I am not looking forward to the mad-rush that is going to happen the first night of school once everyone gets their lists...
When asked why they weren't posting the list online or mailing it out earlier, the school told us that it was due to budgetary constraints. Great - Can't wait to see what else they cut out this year!

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
