TOPIC: A Significant Rite of Passage

A Significant Rite of Passage
2 Years, 3 Months ago
My son is a 6 year old first grader. He has accomplished many milestones in his 6 + years, many of which he is tremendously proud. He can ride a bike and a horse, brush his teeth, read chapter books, jump rope, catch a football, hit a baseball and swim. But the most significant milestone of his life (from his perspective) began last evening. He has a loose tooth and he is pumped beyond all belief. It is incredible to see him this excited! Ain't life grand!

Congrats. What's the going rate for the Tooth Fairy these days?

It is an exciting moment. Congrats to you and to your boy. Fun stuff.

Not to be a wet blanket, but something to bear in mind: each of your kids has 20 baby teeth. You currently have three kids. That means that the Tooth Fairy has to remember not to have too many Dogfish 90-Minute IPAs about 60 times in the next decade.

The Tooth Fairy duty is the one "magical" parenting duty that drives me completely nuts. A recent fail on this front led to my daughter asking about Santa and the Easter Bunny. The Tooth Fairy fail has undermined all childhood magic.

But enjoy that first loose tooth!

(We leave a buck, btw.)

We're still hanging our Tooth Fairy on Terry Pratchett's Tooth Fairy racquet from the HogFather. But we're iconoclasts that way.

Good luck with the teeth, Brad. I've recently heard that they can tighten back into their sockets overnight. I don't know how much that diminishes once their teeth should be looking to fall out.

I'm not an IPA fan, but I've heard good things about DFH120. We have a bar in town that gets it regularly. I do like me some Southern Tier unearthly.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
