What are the very best snacks for kids?
3 Years, 8 Months ago
It's snack week here at DadLabs, and we're interested to know what you think the best snacks are to give the kids? And what are your criterion? How much the kids like them? Convenience? Nutritional value? How much dad likes them? Let us know all of your thoughts on snacks.

One snack that a friend of mine makes for her kids is a whole wheat tortillia or pita, a banana and peanut butter and jam

The kids really like them and now that they are older it's something simple they can even get on their own. With the selections of nut butters and sugar free jams out there now it can even be pretty healthy. When I've watched the kids I usually make one for myself too.

On the subject of Organics or healthy snacks, one of the things the lady at the health food store recommended was to physically remove the packaging from the house. Just like in the video where you had that Boon... pokeball.. thing. Also getting rid of the packaging helps with other things like cereal, A Cereal Saver lets you get by with the off brand of cereals without having a hyperactive lagomorph declaring the proprietary state of your childrens psychedelic morning mush.

This one last thing on cereal...Had to...

One thing we had during our Vegan Phase [let us never speak of it again] that really helped was a dehydrator, which fully qualifies as an Over Priced Gewgaw but it it could turn out a LOT of home made fruit rolls and jerky in record time, which is also helpful for families with a lot of food allergies.

just my two cents.

Pokeball. Nice.

I like the cereal saver, but, not to sound like a kook -- but has Tupperware gone BPA free?

Dehydrators are cool, but only when Billy Mays talks about them (Oxiclean is sponsoring an upcoming week -- no lie).

Most Tupperware/Rubbermaid is made out of Polyproplene which is a recommended bottle material, and heat safe to 325 degrees F, so it's pretty kosher for storing snackfoods, even in the Ark of the Covenenant Face Melting Heat found in the back of a minivan.

Billy Mays you say? I shall prepare my beard envy with expectant fervor

Well we're not a super organic family by any means. We're trying to do better with some of the stuff we eat though.

My wife absolutely loves Fruitabu fruit leathers. They are organic, so they're free of additives and preservatives, but if you taste them, you would never know. My wife told my sister-in-law about them and she bought some for my nieces, and the box was gone in two days! But at least she didn't have to worry about them getting sick or having a sugar rush because, like I said, they're all natural. I have to admit I like them a lot myself, and I think they'd make great snacks for kids.

Now for younger kids, Fruitabu makes smooshed fruit. It comes in a tube like Go-gurt, but it's more of an applesauce consistency. Sounds bad, but tastes good. Fruitabu is a great snack choice for young and old.

We go mostly for fruits and carrots as snacks, but sometimes we get the boxes of individual cookies or fruit snacks because they are more easier to pack. We have started getting those 100 calorie packs, which she loves, but are still healthy for her. Also popcorn can be a very healthy snack that we can give to her.

We're kinda fortunate in that our little guy likes pretty healthy stuff. His favorites are strawberry yogurt, cheddar cheese cubes, raisins, cinammon-apple rice cakes, grapes, and the ultimate snack item - bananas! And most of those are pretty portable so we don't have to buy a bunch of separate travel snacks.

Lately, he's really been enjoying those Flat Earth fruit-flavored chips too. I know those aren't as healthy as some of the other stuff, but they are quite a bit better than regular chips.

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
