saturday visitation
1 Year, 10 Months ago
Hi everyone. I've recently been granted visitaion with my son every Saturday. I am running out of things to do during the five hours we're allowed together. There is absolutely no money for fun and I was wondering if anyone could give me some ideas what to do.

First, hey Lab gurus, can we ditch the spam above? People suck.

Micheal,
What tv shows/characters is your son into? He's 8? Perhaps plan/build some re-enactments with those characters. Do crafts related to them. (Make costumes, take photos.) Maybe write a "comic book" like page(s) using them, then one week draw the book or page(s), then the next, take photos instead, to replace each panel. A "live action" comic of sorts. Then cut out the thought/voice bubbles and paste them all on a page. Kinda like scrap-booking, only cooler and more manly. (Especially if it's an action comic and you can add POW! and KABLAM! graphics.)

The Geoboard that DaddyTroy talked about would kill a few hours, and wouldn't be terribly expensive. And it's educational, always a plus. If you have a GPS, perhaps geocaching? (It can be done without it, using google maps.) There's a "riddle" version of geocaching, without the tech... but for the life of me I can't find the link... I KNOW I saved it. Perhaps Daddy Troy has it, as I remember mentioning it to him as well. It seemed like more fun to me.

I'm totally shootin' in the dark here. Mine is only 2. But just some brainfarts I had and look forward to doing with TheBoy when he's older.

Edit: Found it! (don't know if it's the original one I found, but this is the thing)

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
