TOPIC: Dads of Daughters: Are You a Princess Parent?

Dads of Daughters: Are You a Princess Parent?
2 Years, 7 Months ago
In today's episode of the Lab, Daddy Brad and I come clean by doing an inventory of all the "princess" gear in our house. The results shocked me. You'll have to see for yourself. The question here is: are you a princess dad (and does that make you the KING)? Is the whole princess theme something you work against? Why or why not? Are there particular items of princess gear that particularly annoy you? And if you are trying to work against the princess image, what is your best technique? Give us your thoughts!

Resisting the pull of the princess paraphernalia is akin to resisting gravity....i.e. life will be a lot easier if you just accept it's continuous presence.

I do NOT believe raising a strong independent daughter is mutually exclusive with princess paraphernalia anyway.

I do, however, appreciate Liz Powell's comment about unrealistic body images. That's something I need to be on the lookout for in the future, I guess.

I have to say that I am surrounded by princess paraphanelia in my house with two girls consumers in residence. I agree that the unreal body image thing is an issue, but then there are few childrens television presenters that are overweight, so dolls arent the only culprit.

I look forward to the day when mattel have the courage to make a barbie that does not like to look at herself in the mirror and wears baggy sweats .

I know this thread is a bit old but I just joined the forum so I hope you'll indulge me.

As the dad of two girls, I'm awash in princess stuff. I like the idea that it makes me the King--never thought of it that way!

I've long been interested in medieval history and folklore, so the princess stuff doesn't bother me that much. Heck, I have fun playing in the princess pavilion; it's like a cool medieval tent.

Hey guys!

So...how many of our wives grew up with all the princess stuff and turned out to be fine? I know my wife loved all her princess stuff and has a very healthy body image! How many of the people who claim to have suffered pressure due to "societal constraints" placed on them as children in the toys they could play have no other problems in their lives?

Isn't it our job as dads and parents to not always shield them from the world; but rather, to teach them how to respond to everything the world throws at them? I realize this is difficult for a one week old like my little stinker, but my wife and I plan to try and implement the concepts of balance and time and place for everything with her...

We don't want to be reactionary; rather, we want to be realistic.

Abby is 5 months old now and is starting to get into toys. i am becoming more and more aware of all of the princess products out there. I agree that this is a problem and something that I will avoid where possible. I feel that this will feed an unhealthy mentality of entitlement and narcissism. My daughter needs to learn that success comes from hard work and determination. Christa McAuliffe should be an example to little girls, not Sleeping Beauty.

On the practical side, buy more stuffed animals than dolls. A lot of my daughter's imaginative play is done with stuffed animals.

I also really like American Girl dolls. Although these are premium dolls, they come with an interesting stories and costumes. I prefer these to Barbies, Bratz or any Princess branded dolls.

That said, I think that a girl playing with Barbies is doing something better for herself than a girl watching TV.

Very true on that front.

If Princess Leia is the princess she looks up to, then I will not have a problem. She is one tough cookie!

Year of the Dad

Episode 845 - Year of the Dad. What's trending in 2012? Dads! Laurie Gelman, co-host of The Mom Show talks about the shifting roles of primary care givers from Mom to Dad. There's also the scarier trend of reality TV/YouTube/internet fame influencing parenting. Parents need to be more aware of what children are watching. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2.5 hours of "screen time" which includes ALL screens, not just TV. One way to battle technology and hours and hours of texting, bad youtube videos, and generally bad programming is family dinner. Unplug and spend genuine quality time with your family.

eProofing Your Wireless Network

Daddy Clay points out the importance of setting up a secure wireless network. It's easy to with the software that comes with your router, and can be done via the "Network and Sharing Center" control panel on PCs, or the Airport Utility on Macs. Giving the access code out also can allow access to your personal files on devices on that network. Some routers like the Linksys e4200 offer Dual Zone, Guest Zone, or SSID features which allow you to set up access to the internet, but NOT your other devices on the network. Shutting down the network is a great way to limit family access and controlling time limits for your children, particularly during certain times like study time, family dinner, or even overnight.
