Final weight: 186.2
Marathon time: 3 hrs 42 mins While I may have come up a little short on the first number, the second makes up for it. This has been my favorite challenge yet for a lot of reasons. Mostly because, for me, the goals were so clear and the result so surprising. I was unable to meet my weight loss goals, but able to far surpass my marathon goals for reasons that may be related. I really appreciated having a forum to share the experience and truly enjoyed hearing about the experiences you guys were having. There's a long post(s) brewing about the specifics of my race experience, so I won't dump all that here. But I know that my health and fitness pursuits are going on from here -- where I'm not exactly sure, but somewhere -- so stand by for future challenges. Cheers. |

Daddy Clay replied to the topic Re:toddler dad and expecting. in the forums.
I was worried about having a second child, too, but for different reasons. Our first was born prematurely and the pregnancy, birth and hospital stay were very traumatic. I didn't think I could handle that again.
After a couple years, my wife convinced me. We now have 3 kids, and I would not have it any other way. Honestly, the biggest life changes happen with the first kid. Each kid after that has a smaller and smaller impact. So you've made most of the hardest adjustments already. And each kid bring so much more great stuff -- love, a completely new personality -- that it's almost like the additional kids are an even better investment. More payoff with less cost to you personally. It's okay and pretty normal to be struggling with this right now. I think most guys go through it. I'm betting when that baby actually get here -- lots of those worries are going to disappear. Welcome to DadLabs -- and Congratulations. |

Today's obsession: hydration strategy.
Austin Marathon has water stops every mile, so I won't carry water like I do when I train. They offer gatorade and water at every stop. I'll have gels (I like PowerBar Energy Gel, Strawberry Banana with caffeine -- just the right consistency, not too thick) that I will eat every 6 miles. I'll start taking water at mile 3, water at every stop starting mile 10, maybe mixing in some gatorade on the back half. The weather forecast is holding in at ideal -- 48 degrees at the gun. Perfect for running, but it does mean I'll probably want to wear a layer I can drop at the start. |

In the chute. Now checking weather forecasts hourly -- looks perfect at the moment for Sunday, but rain on Saturday makes me nervous. A full in the rain would kinda suck.
Prepping this week by losing key gear like favorite headphones and SPIBelt. Also completed final strength workout today. Last long run tomorrow (8 miler with a couple race pace pieces). Then it's just a couple 4 mile shake out runs Fri and Sat. Then go time. @funkydung Love the long-haul nature of this goal. We might have to build the next challenge around your time frame. |

Today: 186
Looks like that's about where I'll be when the gun goes off on Sunday. I may drift a bit higher as I taper down. Only one run of any length left -- an 8 miler on Wednesday. Already feeling a touch wistful about training. Could I actually miss it? My worries about the race itself: guts and glory. My stomach has been an issue on my last few long training runs. I don't want cramps or a stop for bathroom breaks to interfere with my big day. One thing they don't tell you -- marathons require restroom strategy. And I've let some time expectations creep in -- 4 hours looms large. I've been advised against that. I know what it feels like to finish a great race and yet be disappointed because of a time goal. I started marathon training to sidestep that very thing. So I'm trying to manage that. I feel great about my readiness. In the months of training, I have never yet missed a single run (just jinxed it). My fitness is about as good as it gets for me. The gun is 7am CST next Sunday. If you want to follow along on race day, there's and app for that -- android and apple. The Livestrong Marathon app. I'm wearing bib # 1010. And we're still accepting donations for our charities here. I've already started to think about my post marathon fitness program. Not yet exactly sure what that's going to look like. @krellpw Congrats on hitting your goal and for the successful cleanse program. What a great result. |

Daddy Clay replied to the topic Re:Expecting our first! in the forums.
Welcome. There are tradeoffs that come with having kids at all ages. I've yet to find someone that think their way (young or old) was great. No regrets.
Don't be shy. We'd love to hear about your experience and hear any questions you've got along the way. |

I think Cheerios are great starting when babies can make that pincer movement with the thumb and index finger.
Here's a video we made on introducing finger foods. |

Sounds like you've got a good medical team that caught this early. No personal experience here, but I'm interested to learn more if you feel like sharing.
I know that first pregnancies are anxious enough without bonus worries. Hang in there. |

Daddy Clay replied to the topic Re:Betting on Baby in the forums.
Sorry, Miranda, but I'm going on the late end as well (though the 7th is a full moon). With tall people, techs tend to over-estimate the gestational age of the baby.
I'm going with Ides of March -- the 15th. Big first baby means a bit of a long haul, so I'm guessing overnight labor and an early morning birth at 4:35 AM. |

We've got great sponsors in BabyBjorn, New Balance, Windi helping us support two wonderful charities, Colins Hope and Hand to Hold. Kelli Kelley is the Founder/Executive Director of Hand to Hold. They provide comprehensive navigation resources and support to parents who have had a premature birth or loss of a baby. Alissa Magrum is the Executive Director of Colin's Hope. Their mission raise water safety awareness to prevent drownings. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under age of 5 and the second leading cause in children ages 1-14. Kelli and Alissa will also be running this sunday. Please visit and join our sponsors in supporting their organizations. Alissa offers these tips for race day. Give an appreciation gift to your significant other for being away so much during training. If you have trouble drinking and running, like Daddy Clay, it's ok to stop and take a drink. And definitely have a good poo plan in place and go to the bathroom before the starting gun. It's a long run. Episode 848 - Team DadLabs is brought to you by BabyBjorn, New Balance, and Windi in support of ColinsHope and HandtoHold.
Burnie Burns, Co-Founder of Rooster Teeth Studios and Co-Creator of one of our favorite web shows, "Red vs. Blue," chats with Daddy Brad about video games and parenting and some of the benefits of playing video games with your kids. For many parents today, gaming has always been apart of their lives. They grew up with Nintendo, so for video games to be a part of their family life is not surprising. With the online gaming interactivity available today, gaming can be shared across the globe with family and friends. We're all for limiting screen time, but there's no reason you can't share that screen time with your children.
