Why Reading About Parenting is Bad for You
By Daddy Clay Friday, February 3rd, 2012
Reading parenting columns is a dangerous business. You should go back to playing Fruit Ninja.
In my most recent experience, a quick read of a piece in a major national newspaper nearly resulted in: one car crash, one house fire, and several lacerations.
The column in question was of the kind that makes you feel inadequate. (There are only two kinds. The other kind is usually written by a bumbler about his or her parenting misadventures, inducing the reader to feel smug and superior. Sorry for making you feel so inadequate all these years.) The author opined that she was sick of her kids just doing all the dishes, she wanted them to graduate to preparing entire meals for the family. Read the rest of this entry »
Broccoli?
By Daddy Brad Wednesday, August 4th, 2010
The other night’s Cast Of Dads podcast was very timely. After getting all the gory details of Michael’s late night scotch induced fall and trip to the emergency room, we talked all about encouraging our kids to eat healthy. This was particularly interesting to me as I am desperately trying to persuade my oldest to eat vegetables, any vegetable. He refuses. Much like Brad Pitt’s character in “A River Runs Through It” Walker would sleep at the table before eating one bite of vegetable. Almond Milk
By Daddy Brad Wednesday, July 14th, 2010
I am not a worrier. We all have intuitive gifts and of one mine is to be mostly free from anxiety of the unknown, or even for that matter the actual stresses of the day. And although I am way down on the bell curve of hand wringing I do posses a healthy level of concern for the well-being and safety of my children. I admit that I come from a long line of fretters, certain members of my family can obsess and be vexed with the best of them but the gene just skipped a generation.
My Aunt is worried about almonds, or more accurately a shortage of almonds. Her theory is that with the rise in popularity of vegan diets the demand for almond milk will continue to sky rocket and there will not be any almonds left over to smoke and eat the old fashioned way. Hmmmmm, now that I think of it I do know several newly proclaimed vegans.
Anyways if you are interested in conversations about milking almonds we talk about it in this weeks Cast of Dads pod cast. Take a listen. Read the rest of this entry »
Goolash
By Daddy Brad Thursday, May 13th, 2010
A long, long time ago when I was a kid in elementary school, one of my favorite days in the school cafeteria was Manger’s Choice. Essentially this was the day they cleaned out all of the leftovers from the refrigerator, dumped them into a big pot and made a big ass stew from everything we hadn’t eaten over the past two weeks.
I loved it! You never knew what you were going to get. The exotic flavor combinations introduced to me at such a young and impressionable age laid the ground work for an incredible culinary journey better know as my life. I’ll eat anything and relish the confluence of flavor that make the normal palette shudder. Read the rest of this entry »
