Heads and Tails

By Daddy Brad Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

This past week on the 31st Cast of Dads podcast, I started out ranting about a subject that is sticking in my craw. The culprit is kids’ not wearing helmets when they are riding push scooters like the Razor. I require my son to wear his helmet if the vehicle he is taming raises his head more than 24 inches off of the ground. Thus bike, scooter, skateboard and unicycle require a helmet but Green Machine and Big Wheel do not.

My logic is that a noggin cracking on the asphalt behaves the same way regardless if falls from a bike or a skateboard. The problem is that many parents in my neighborhood do not follow the same brain protecting philosophy. From my estimation roughly 50% of the kids between 4 and 10 years old do not wear helmets when riding scooters. My seven-year old son is aware of this and is beginning to ask questions. “Why do I have to wear a helmet and my buddies don’t?” I’m sure this is just the beginning of his desire to be dangerous and cool.

But I am not wavering on this one. No Helmet, No Ride!

Come on parents help me out, protect your kids BRAINS! Read the rest of this entry »
