Techno Dad Marked Fail
By Daddy Clay Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I hate it when my techno-gadgets turn around and bite me in the ass, ESPECIALLY when it is front of my wife. She doesn’t even carry a cell-phone, and mocks me mercilessly on my digi-dependent lifestyle. This weekend was the worst yet.
We’re invited to spend the weekend with the Nice Couple From New York at their lake house. Wife and kids very excited by the prospect. The place is in the sticks, but getting there is no problem because I flagged the place on the Garmin on a previous visit. Push the button and go.
Problem is, I left the button and the attached gizmo at the office.
No worries, because I know the general location, and we can just call when we get close. We get close, I call, I get switched directly to voice mail. I call again. Again. Again. Again. Again. Again. Panic is creeping into the minivan.
Could I possibly have programmed the number wrong into my iPhone? No way, but that’s no problem, because I have the email she sent with her number in it. I glance at the email, and sure enough, it’s different. Problem solved. I pull over to program in the correct number and look down to realize I have accidentally erased the email.
My wife is so pissed, she can’t even manage to deride me.
Garmin. Fail. iPhone. Fail.
The solution: call a third party for the number. Where does this bacon-saving friend have the number? Scrawled on the inside cover of the directory, of course. Stylus and wax tablet defeats iPhone yet again.
Fortunately, my wife was so relieved that we found the place that she forgot to gloat.
Or maybe she’s just saving that for later.
