Lab Test: Quixx Headlight Restorer

By Daddy Clay Thursday, May 16th, 2013

Some things just work as advertised. One of those things is the Quixx Repair System Headlight Restorer.

Let’s start with this: I’m a minivan guy. Not only that, I’m an old minivan guy.

Wait.

What I mean to say is that I’m a guy with an old minivan. Okay, I’m old, too. But the point here is that I have always loved and appreciated minivans — the practicality of a vehicle that’s low to the ground with sliding doors. To this day, I fail to see how a slightly more boxy vehicle riding slightly higher off the ground makes me slightly more of a man.

So, a real man is one that falls for image marketing that leads him away from his own self-interest? A real man is easily duped?

But I’ll leave the “aesthetics vs being actually good” debate for another time. Read the rest of this entry »

Austin Goes Crazy for F1: Are Hot Wheels to Blame?

By Daddy Clay Friday, November 16th, 2012

Another post in my ongoing work with Chevy Culture, a lifestyle and auto site sponsored by Chevrolet. Click through for the full post on Chevy Culture, and come back in the next few weeks and months for more.

My home town of Austin has gone completely car crazy. The first Formula One race held in the last five years is happening right here on Sunday, and we’ve all lost our minds. The news coverage of the traffic around The Circuit of the Americas race track is wall-to-wall. Most of downtown is shut down.

Half the citizenry is hunkered down muttering that the whole event is “un-Austin” in its excess (parties and clubs with $500+ admission charges are often cited by this faction), and half the citizenry is wearing headphones and partying with a dude from Montreal named Christoph (or waiting in traffic to do so).

It’s an all consuming mania. They even help a footrace around the track last week. Can you imagine? Oh, right, I did that with my older son last week. So cool!

I am both getting the hell out of town and jumping in to Formula One Madness with both feet — heading to a ranch south and east of town to rendezvous with a big group of friends who have come down for the race. It’s unclear whether I will make it to the track.

So where does all this car nuttiness come from? How could we all be so overwhelmed with excitement — positive or negative — about cars rolling around a track. Maybe it starts early in childhood. Maybe it starts with that very first Hot Wheels.

My most recent post over at the Chevy Culture site takes a look at the roots of a boy and his car obsession. It all starts with cleaning out the toy box.

Gentlemen and ladies, start your engines.

Dad at a Car Show: Personality Disorder?

By Daddy Clay Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Attending my first car show (as I did this week — the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as the guest of Ford) stimulated three facets of my personality: the inner  child, the dad and the businessman.

Inner Child
When I travel, I grab a handful of car magazines. When I get the Sunday New York Times, the first thing I read is the car review at the back of the sports section. I’m never happier or more keyed up than when I’m in the throes of researching, testing and buying a new car. My love of cars is childish — having fallen head over heels when I was a kid and my dad pulled up to the house in a new, silver 928. I loved that car, and cars in general ever since. TV Guide

By Daddy Clay Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

I’m thinking of quitting Netflix. And not because they have raised prices or offer a poor service. I’m considering canceling my subscription because Netflix’s streaming service has turned my otherwise semi-normal American sons into obnoxious British automotive journalists.
