Death of a Trade Show: RIP ABC Kids Expo
By Daddy Clay Thursday, September 29th, 2011
As we worked our way across the floor of the ABC Kids Expo, the doom and gloom among the BPA-free bottles and cloth diapers was palpable. Listless exhibitors would meet us at the front of their booths with tales of woe — low foot traffic, poor food choices at the convention center, spotty internet.
And that was at last year’s show. In Vegas. At that show, most of the problems with the expo were blamed on a sputtering economy. The overall sense was that the attendees, and the show itself would soldier on. Read the rest of this entry »
Good News, Dad News Will Totally Shred Today
By Daddy Clay Thursday, September 29th, 2011
Today’s Live Show is really going to shred. And stack. It’s going to stack and shred.
The shred theme is partially a nod to our favorite skate punk, Concretin Nic, who served in many capacities, primarily as host and camera grip, on our recent trip to the ABC Kids Expo in Louisville, Kentucky.
There is still quite a bit to recap, despite Nic’s excellent post, and some less stellar efforts.
In addition to looking back at the products and trends in evidence at the largest baby product expo in the nation, we have a number of other topics to cover as well.
A recent study predicted that the majority of marriages will split domestic responsibilities 50/50 by 2050. Does this seem on the mark? A touch pessimistic? Not if you look at recent campaigns by Ragu. But then again the same corporation supported the creation of the cool Dove + Men products and campaign.
We will take a look at what happens when your electricity gets shredded — are you prepared for a power outage?
And it’s time for all the dads to get shredded again as we relaunch out FitFatFit initiative. For this fall will will run yet another Fitness Challenge — The Marathon to Normal. The goal here is getting close to a “normal” weight, or finding a “normal” lifestyle that promotes health and fitness and sets a positive example for our kids.
Finally, in keeping with the theme, we will be giving away a Swingline Stack and Shred paper shredder. The Stack and Shred fits perfectly under a desk, you can load up to 100 sheets of paper at one time, close the hatch and it goes to work. You do not have to stand there and feed paper piece by piece or watch for paper jams. It holds up to 7 gallons of shred, and can also shred credit cards. We all have paperwork and documents in the house that at some point need to be properly disposed of — and just tearing them up is really not the best route if you want to ensure against paper based ID Theft.
Join us at 2pm EST for the best 40 minute half hour on the subject if fatherhood that you’ll find anywhere on the web; “Good News, Dad News.”

Recession Shifting Men’s Role From Provider to Caregiver: Wayne Moyer, a 39-year-old father of three, has a new appreciation for stay-at-home parents. When Kids Bring Up Same-Sex Marriage: My son’s preschool friend, Noah, indeed does have two dads, who have become very much a part of our inner circle of friends. Yet, in that moment in the car, my mind immediately jumped to the subject of the birds and the bees, and I started to feel unsure about what the kids’ next questions would be, and how to thoughtfully and appropriately proceed. 5,000 Kids a Year Hurt in Falls From Windows: We still are seeing over 5,000 children a year treated in hospital emergency departments across the country for injuries related to window falls, said Dr. Gary A. Smith, study author and director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. “That’s 14 children a day. This continues to be a very common, important problem.” (CNN.com)
Writing Problems Common in Kids with ADHD: Kids with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder are more likely to have writing problems such as poor spelling and grammar than their peers, suggests a new study. And the difference may be especially conspicuous in girls with ADHD. (Reuters)
