Dreamworks Gives French Folktale Second Best Treatment Ever

Look, a fun sweeps involving the second best adaptation of the famous French folk tale. A very close second best, I might add.

But my “Outlaw Puss in Cowboy Boots” has really stood the test of time. If I put my script head to head with the Dreamworks product, I think we come up dead even. But throw in the original songs by Joe McDermott…no contest. By the way, Dreamworks, thanks for the subtle tip of the hat in the promo copy (“…fighter, lover and outlaw Puss…[emphasis is mine]).

You may remember the show premiered here in Austin at the Zach Scott Theatre but went on to further productions in other traditional theatre markets like Abilene, Louisville and Boise.

The play was then revived for the legendary Scottish Rite Theatre production in 2006.

Wow. 2006. That was the last time that one of my plays was produced. Five years ago. A really great production that was all the more fun because I could take my kids. They got to see a play written by their dad. And they loved it! Well, actually Bubba was already a little too cool for it at eight, and Coop had to go to the lobby and cry, and Ri-ri is deathly afraid of anyone in costume. But they acted liked they liked it.

Five years is a long time. Even longer since I was last writing a play. I’ve loved writing the DadLabs stuff, but…
