As a young boy, we didn’t celebrate Father’s Day like the way most American families traditionally would do. You know, gifts for the father, or a party is thrown for dad/granddad/great-grand dad. Instead, my dad would make Father’s Day a celebration about us–his kids. He IS a father because of us, and he believed that’s truly what Father’s day is about. A special day for fathers to show his eternal joy of becoming a father, thanks to his kids.
Quite often on Father’s Day (weather permitting), we (my bro and I) would go fishing with our Dad early that morning. Dad would wake us up around 5 am for the long drive to our favorite fishing spot on the Arkansas River. We would fish until noon, depending on how well the fish took our baits. We mostly fished for bass, stripers, and sometimes perch. My dad once caught a small snapping turtle at the end of his line. That was an exciting day! Afterwards, my mom would clean, gut the fish, season them, and cook them later for dinner. It was fun times, simple and unstressed. My dad would say that his “Father’s day” gift was being able to share a few happy moments with his two sons doing an activity that we all enjoyed. Happy Father’s Day everyone! Good Luck!
I want to answer honestly, even if it’s not a very good answer to the question. I grew up without my Dad and nobody really celebrated it in my family. As for Memorial Day, well all I can remember of it is the little celebrations they would have at my school. Sorry for such an answer.
Two years ago on Memorial Day I had my very first baby, a little girl, who is the most precious thing in the world to me now. I didn’t realize it was Memorial Day at the time, actually I didn’t realize it was Memorial Day until I was planning for her first birthday party. That is one Memorial Day I will never forget.
The most memorable Father’s Day to me was when I came home from Afghanistan and for the first time in my sons life, he ran up and gave me a big hug and called me dad. You see, my son is 33 and has fragile X syndrome so it’s like he is still 9 years old. In my entire life I had never had him hug me or call me “My Dad” before. That will always be my fondest memory of all. My son is my world and is the Best son a man could wish for! Without Question!
My answer to this one was a bit tricky. See my stepfather adopted me at age 13, so I didnt have what you would call a “normal” father/son relationship. Thank God for that. When I married my wife, her children we already almost grown. So I guess my favorite memory is everything that my stepfather did for me that he never had to. It helped me (unknowingly at the time) more than any other advice he gave because I ended up in the same situation he was in, and was better prepared than most men. Thanks Dad, for that. I know thats not a fathers day memory, but I stick with my answer. LOVE YOU DAD!
Cliff.
My favorite Memorial Day memory was in 1992. Our whole family was there including my Grandma who just passed recently, all my aun’t & uncle(My dad has 7 brothers & sisters + 21 nephews and nieces).
I really wish we had a video camera at the time because it was a fun event & the last time we had a true Family reunion with everyone there together. Since then a lot of family members have passed, moved away, or grown up and started raising their own family and it’s really hard to get everyone together at least together at one event/holiday setting.
I just got my first HD video camera & it would really be nice to win so I can speak to them in person via video instead of just being able to call & I’d love to be able to put together another Family reunion soon to record it.
Thanks for the chance to win the Toshiba Satellite – Laptop / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor / 14″ Display / 6GB Memory / 500GB Hard Drive, it would be used a lot.
DeanM1978 – (also my Twitter name)
I remember staying up until twelve o’clock (very late for my age) with my mother and sister trying to bake my father a nice cake. In the morning we woke up before my father did, and gave him the cake. It was horrible, hehe, but he said to us: “It’s the best cake I had in my life”, and then he called his office and told them he won’t make it. We all went to the park and had a great time. When the night came we slept together in my parents bedroom. It was warm and it felt like nothing could ever hurt me.
Not being involved in the military, my favorite is Father’s Day! I’m 16 and I love showing my dad how much he means to me, I mean he’s given a lot to me! Last year we got him a new grill and he loved it! Seeing him really happy while grilling me up a big steak was a feelingI loved to have!
Father’s Day is always a great time in my house
My favourite Father’s Day memory would be back in my grade school years where all of my family, included extended ones, lived relatively close to each other. So because of this, we’d have one HUGE family outing for every time Father’s Day comes up.
None of my memories are as inspirational or clever as some of the others, but it was pretty memorable. My favorite Memorial day memory involved bananas. My wife decided to try and make a new pie that she had a recipe for. It called for a healthy amount of bananas. I won’t go into details about how delicious the banana, chocolate, peanut butter, and pudding pie was, because it’s making me really hungry. Alas, we had extra bananas after the pie was made. We had our extended family over and we got to discussing how one of my nephews wouldn’t eat the desert because it had bananans in it. So I took an extra banana and told my nephew that I would pay him $20 if he ate the banana. He refused. Then one of my brothers offered another $50. He still wouldn’t do it. Then another brother offered another $50 (apparently I was the cheap one). Still no banana consumption for $120. After the rest of the family got involved, he now had an offer of $275 to eat a banana. He utterly refused. I have to admit, I admire him for his anti-banana tenacity. So now for Memorial Day, I think of all the soldiers who gave their lives for our country… and bananas.
My dad wasn’t really around when I was a kid, so my memories are of spending the day with my maternal grandfather. He was a quiet man (probably because he couldn’t hear very well and didn’t want a hearing aid) and extrodinarily intelligent. In later years, we would play Scrabble for hours and he would win every time.
i remember drawing a picture of michael jordan for my father when i was a kid…im only 26….and he liked it, and we went and watched space jam, which was proibably more for me than my father.
One of my favorite memories of Father’s Day was taking the traditional Father’s Day Race Track visit with my father-in-law w/my brother-in-law.
This one year, we were doing crappy – we were all losers going into the last race. So we decided to pool our funds, each pick a horse and go for a trifecta (Trifecta Box).
The race started out well, our 3 horses were at the head of the pack, but it was tight. Coming around the stretch – we had the top two horses & the number 5 horse…but it was close.
Our top two horses pulled well ahead but our third horse was coudln’t break the top three w/the finish line appoaching…it finished 4th – we thought all was lost…and were about ready to leave when the red light on the scoreboard flashed “OBJECTION” – the results were not official – there was still a slim chance.
The number 3 horse/rider had apparently fouled the number 5 horse in its climb up. It was disqualified & our horse was moved to 3rd place giving us a big win (well, big for us – I think we won $646).
We finished the day off with take-out chinese food that we brought home to eat with our wives.
It was a fun & memorable day – unfortunately it was also one of the last Father’s Days my father-in-law was able to go to the track.
My favorite Father’s Day memory is my husband’s 1st Father’s Day. He just loves everything about being a dad. We spent the day having a barbeque at our house for him and our families. He just held our son all day and played with him, didn’t want to put him down.
My best fathers day memory is when I was a little kid and my family went out to eat and to the zoo to celebrate fathers day!
My late grandfather adopted me at just 6 months old. He was 61 the year I was born. I made handmade cards for him every Father’s Day. When he passed away, at 90, I found not only those cards, but EVERY card I ever gave him neatly tucked in a box in his drawer in his bedroom.
He was the very best father any girl could ever have.

My dad was in the Army and a lot of Father’s Days were put off till he got back from the field or (for a time) a war. We just celebrated when he was there. Sometimes it might have been months late, but we did it. He will be 75 this year, but is still my “daddy”.
I talked to him last night and he told me what he was using for a laptop and I cringed (a creaky old Dell from almost 10 years ago!). I think he needs a new one.
My favorite memory of Father’s Day was last year when my children (1.5 and 3.5 at the time) took me out to a movie. It it one of my favorite things we do together as a family and we went out to a movie theater that has a balcony for food and drinks. Both of my kids sat in my lap for (nearly) the entire showing. While I was munching on my gourmet hot dogs and truffle french fries, I knew that this was where I wanted to be on Father’s day. It was great.
We never much celebrated Father’s Day as I was growing up. As an adult it has been quite a treat to make gifts for my mate the last few years with my kids. He is not their “father” but he is their “daddy.” My daughter wrote him a poem last year that brought tears to both our eyes!
When I was a kid, we had huge family reunions on Memorial Day. My Dad comes from a large family so our reunions were really something … lots of relatives, food, games and warm weather. It was nice!

My favorite father’s day memory is my husbands first father’s day, it was so special getting to celebrate it with him!!
My favorite Memorial Day memory is the year my husband and I got married- we decided to create a family tradition of visiting a military cemetery or memorial every Memorial Day. A move interfered this year, but I’m looking forward to creating more memories next year!
I think my favorite Fathers Day memory is when after I got married, my Father in Law welcomed me into his family and meant it.My own Dad wasn’t the best, and had passed away when I was 15- there was a void in my life.
The very first Fathers Day with my Father in Law ’stepping in’ happened almost 26 years ago- I called since he was in California and wished him a Happy Fathers Day- he had a daughter for the first time saying Happy Fathers Day and I finally had a good man to call Dad.
Love ya Dad- with hugs and a kiss only a daughter can give !
My favorite Father’s Day memories are the times that we attend the Back to the 50’s car show as a family. We go about every 5th year with Dad and it is ALWAYS a blast; hot sun, cool cars and a great afternoon walking around with Dad.
I guess it would have to be fathers day maybe 30+ years ago with my dad teaching me to ride my bike without training wheels.
my best father’s day memory is the first father’s day for my husband- it’s always special to celebrate life’s firsts and I tried to make it memorable for him by letting him have a day off diaper duty-lol
My favorite Memorial Day memory is the years I was a Brownie and Girl Scout, our troop would march in the Memorial Day parade from Main Street to the local VFW Post, where we were served all the hotdogs, hamburgers, chips & soda that we wanted.
My favorite Father’s Day memory is when I was announced the winner of a new laptop thanks to a video contest on DadLabs.
(Feel free to wait to post this until the 19th)
Now, if it must be a realistic answer, then I suppose it’s the day my son tried making me breakfast in bed. He brought me two pieces of bread (untoasted, too young to use the toaster); an egg (uncooked, too young to use the stove); and a glass of juice (in an uncapped sippy cup, too young to reach the top shelf).
The part that wasn’t so great is that he did this at 5am.
My favorite Father’s Day memory was actually just last year. It was my first Father’s Day as a dad, and the holiday took on a new, incredibly amount of meaning. Later, my father and I would go to a baseball game together (as part of my gift to him) and it was one of the most meaningful times I’ve ever spent with him. It was not only a father-son connection anymore, but also a mutual respect as two dads who understood each other and could connect on a brand new level.
My favorite Father’s Day memory was actually in 2006 it was the last father day m dad was alive and he had a great time we order ribs and cheesecake and love it all i was so happy to hear him on the phone telling his friends about it. I miss my dad alot and i wish he was still around.
Thank you for the great video making tips! I have to admit I have done my share of filming of less than stellar quality! I would also like to thank the Wozniak family and all of the active and retired military for the sacrifices they have made for the country. I hope they all have a nice Father’s Day!
That’s a hard one. I think I will have to say it was my husband’s first Father’s Day. because it was the beginning of our holidays as parents!
Well since I am a new dad, my favorite memory has to be my very own first Father’s day. My daughter was born last year March 8, 2010. And that Father’s day is the best one I have ever had. Not much more someone could ask for, she means the world to me.
My favorite Memorial Day was waaaaaay back during the teenage years. My Dad, the forever history buff, took us to Washington DC for the first time. Being to cool to look like I was interested, I listened to his stories and lessons as we went through memorials and sites through dark sunglasses. I’ll never forget the look on my Dad’s face as all five of his children slowly silenced and stared as we went through Arlington National Cemetery. We heard him quietly tell a little about dozens of graves and finally the Tomb of the Unknowns. Those brave who died without acknowledgement or recognition, without thier families and loved ones knowing what happened to them or how they died, it’s a special prayer for those men and women and thier sacrifice. My Dad’s silence in front of the Tomb spoke louder than all his stories of history and war. What respect we learned that day!
This year was my boyfriend’s first Father’s Day. He is officially a dad, and our daughter (yes, only 8-months-old) made him a great card to mark his first. It will be my favorite memory, as I’m sure it will be his
My favorite is every year when the family gets together and we have a good old bar-bee-que and play outside games topped with some root beer.
Father’s day means a lot to me. My father was the apple of my eye. He taught me many life lessons. On Father’s Day he took me fishing on a tiny John boat (which then seemed huge) on a gigantic (not so much) lake. I thought he was so brave to not be scared as we fished in the middle of the lake (with many boats around us). This year marks 10 years that he has passed.
On a brighter note, this year is my husband’s first Father’s Day. Our daughter just started saying dada and associating it with him. He smiles everytime she does it. I know my husband will be an amazing father since he has already outshined many others. I am blessed.
Thank you for this opportunity. “See” you online.
For me, the fathers day memory I remember most was taking the day and our family out to brunch at the River Crab restaurant (Owned by the Meur family that owns the Charlies Crab franchise). It was a great restaurant and I always remember loving the opportunity to spend time with my dad as he was always working and this day was one that I always knew that I had his undivided attention. Se we would eat, share and just enjoy time together. We do not live close to one another anymore and I miss these opportunities, but the memories live on!
We spent Father’s day the year I was 16 at a great huge family reunion with all of my dad’s brothers and all of my cousins. There must have been 150 people there, from sunup to way after dark in a local wilderness park. Lots of reminiscing, lots of food, lots of fun and memories made.
I’m a divorced daddy, living 900 miles away from my boys due to financial woes. My favorite Father’s Day memory was last year. I spent an entire day with my two boys, and I loved every second of it. My oldest made me a paper tie to wear, and my youngest made me a picture frame. I proudly wore my tie wherever we went, and both are still in my office.
This weekend will be just as nice. I’m driving down tomorrow morning to visit them. I’m planning a trip to the zoo, and to take them to their favorite puppet show at the library. Every time they hug me and say “I love you daddy” it makes me melt.
Tweeted your message (@Spud_Slinger) and I’m hoping I win. I will use this laptop to Skype with my boys, so they can ’see’ me more often, instead of the infrequent times where I can actually afford to make the 900 mile trek.
Fingers are crossed.
These stories are wonderful folks, thanks for sharing.
Wow, this is a hard one! I have so many memories of Father’s Day with my dad. The most special memory I have is a trip out west to Colorado which was a family trip. We loaded up the old Motor Home, my weiner dog named Snoopy, my brother, mother and aunt, uncle and cousins with a yellow Mazda station wagon in tow. Took us days to get there (many stops along the way). But boy was it worth it! We camped, fished from the most beautiful streams anywhere. Fried fish over the campfire, played games late at night and it didn’t matter that we practically slept on top of each other. Fun times, will never forget that trip. My dad was the captain of the ship if you will and guided us in the most fun memory filled trip that I have ever had.
I thank God every day for my father and what he has done and been for me.
I like stories. Especially those with a happy ending…and a free laptop!!!
Oh…and a Toshiba laptop at that! WooHooo!!!!!!! Invalid token my butt!
This most recent Memorial Day would have go down as our favorite. On May 6th my father suffered a massive heart attack, followed by another 2 days later. Both were near fatal and he needed to be shocked back to life. If there’s a positive to take out of the whole ordeal, it’s the seemingly life-long rift between my father and I has been overcome. During month of hospitalization I got spend a lot of time with him (at least 10 hours every day). A new bond formed and it just grew stronger. On Memorial Day, as usual, I was by his bed side, and we talked, about everything, from future plans to how past relatives were affected by WWII. It may sound ordinary but as son, such day was a gift. The road to recovery will be a long one. I hope the worst is behind. And I hope for an equally great Father’s Day this Sunday.
My Favorite Memorial Day memory is waking up in Hawaii. Was a great way to spend memorial day in the most beautiful part of the world.
My fav is my fiances first. He was so excited to get to celebrate one,
Hi DadLabs! My favorite Father’s Day memory would have to be the Father’s Day dear my 9th birthday! Our family went to Disney World! My Dad gave me a piggy-back ride from pool to pool at the hotel, I think their were 7 pools! So much fun! I miss being a kid, lol!
@VectoringMomma
Oh my Dad and I loved to metal detect every week and look for treasures at the beach and school yards. I remember the enjoyment we had as we hear the beep come from the detector and digging up to see what we found. @MCJunkie
WhoHoo! Oh man from one dad to another, thank you so much. My laptop just lost the screen video and I sure can use this one. This makes this Fathersday a truely memorable moment but nothing can be the visions in my mind of William, my son run up to me in the Mobile airport and saying “my Dad” with that big O Hug! Thank you so much!
